neverwhere: (Poofy :))
[personal profile] neverwhere
I know I haven't written very much lately, so in order to make it up to you, I thought I would do some informative (and, with luck, quite interesting) Get To Know Me Better memes.

The first, from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] caersidi -- Here are seven of the most famous (and possibly infamous) people I've ever met:

Neil Gaiman: You knew this was going to be first, didn't you. *grins* I've met him (I believe) 12 times, and although we don't really enjoy the same sort of 'pen pal' relationship we used to, I like to believe he still remembers me. I know I will never forget the way he looked the last time I saw him -- when he noticed me in the signing queue, his face lit up with joy, and the stress of a very long day melted away. His genuine smile of pleasure at seeing me is truly one of the happiest moments of my life. It's been two years since then, and I don't know when I will see him again, but I hope it will be soon. The Graveyard Book comes out in September, after all. *grins*

Bill Clinton: I met Bill and Hillary in 1992, when my parents dragged me to a Democratic rally, and I shook both their hands. Which is rather momentous, really. I was also on CNN and several other news channels, as That Girl What Shouted WOOOHOOOO Really Loudly All The Time. Hehehe. Oh, and I saw the cast of Sister Act perform, which was actually really fun. :)

Peter S. Beagle: I have had the incredible honour of not only sharing several fantastic conversations with the author of The Last Unicorn, but dining with him as well. I first met him at Comic-Con, and then at two Lord of the Rings conventions, and was ever so chuffed when he remembered me as the sweet, shy girl who talked his ear off at his signing booth. *grins* He really is such a charming, delightful man. And so amusing too!

Dr Robert T. Bakker: When I was growing up, I wanted nothing more than to be a paleontologist, and Robert Bakker was my idol. He became famous for being one of the 'radical' scientists that Michael Crichton used as an inspiration for Jurrasic Park, but I knew him long before, when his highly controverial (at the time) book The Dinosaur Heresies was published. I was eight, and shocked my parents (and everyone else really) by reading such a dense, scientific work. But I LOVED it. I was so lucky to have met him (in the most bizarre location, a local Nature Company store that closed not long afterwards) when I was just 10 years old, and I think I frightened him by my encyclopaedic knowledge. He was drawing portraits of dinosaurs, and if you guessed what they were you could keep the drawing -- and he had to tell me to shut up so other people could win, which was AWESOME. Hehehe. I still have one, a huge sketch of a Struthiomimus. :) I can't even begin to describe how lucky I feel to have met this remarkable man.

Sir Ian McKellan: Of all the celebrities I've met at the stage door after a performance (and I'm rather pleased to say there are a LOT of them), Ian is probably my favourite. I saw him on three seperate occasions, and although he was mobbed with fans every time, he was always so gracious and welcoming, and so funny too.

Jo Jo the Dolphin: This is my infamous entry! *grins* Jo Jo is infamous, for being a womanizer, as well as a psychic. No, seriously. He was a wild bottlenoise dolphin who lived in the Caribbean (Turks and Caicos, to be precise), with a penchant for pouncing unsuspecting female holidayers, knocking them off waterskis, following them on scuba dives, that sort of thing. And being rather amourous towards them as well. Heh. He was also the subject of a book, Journey into Dolphin Dreamtime, studying the psychic prowess of cetaceans, and how they communicate with each other as well as humans. It's rather fascinating, actually. The bits that are sane, anyway. ;-) He was also featured in several documentaries in the 80s, not long after I swam with him. It was such fun, randomly stumbling upon a show with my favourite dolphin in it!

Douglas Adams: Oh, how I miss you. I met him twice, and it wasn't still enough. His works changed my life -- not just The Guide, but most importantly Last Chance to See (it always saddens me that so many DNA fans have never even heard of this brilliant book, which I maintain is the best thing he ever did). There are so many things I wish I had said to him, and now never will. But at least I had a chance to talk with him, if briefly, and even share an intimate evening sitting next to him, in a quiet bar, not long before he died. And for that, I am eternally grateful. :)

It was really difficult to chose these, actually -- I suppose I could have put the Python Boys as a group entry, but you already knew about them. *grins* And so many celebs to chose from! I'm rather lucky in that respect, I suppose. But really, most of the people I've met are cult figures at best, so I tried to pick the important or impressive ones. I hope you enjoyed it! :)

And now for something not terribly different, from the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] ashfae -- Seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself (that aren't common knowledge).

I talk to myself incessently. No, really, I do. :) Mostly I talk to myself as a reminder to do something, because I'm so absent minded. I try not to mutter in public, but I still do. Especially at work, because although I'm fairly talented at multitasking I have to talk to myself in order to accomplish many things at once. I also talk to inanimate objects a lot. I like to pretend this makes me charmingly quirky, and not just certifiable. *grins*

I have to have a book with me wherever I go. I've always been this way, I simply must have something to read, whether I'm at a relatives house, a resteraunt, school or the beach, I feel lost without it. I read a lot while walking (which is one of the reasons Belle is my favourite Disney heroine), and at the dinner table, which got me in trouble when I was growing up, both at home and at boarding school. But I just can't stop! And really, why would I want to? :)

I still have my stuffed animals, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I love my dolphins and seals, anime characters and every sort of adorable fluffy toy. I don't actually have that many, and most of them I can say are a 'proper' collection, as I've collected exquisite Steiff handmade stuffed animals for over 20 years now. I think my collection is worth rather a lot, to be honest. So it's not just a bunch of fluffy animals, it's an investment. Yeah, that's it. *grins impishly*

I can not stand crunchy things in my squishy foods. Nuts in brownies are a perfect example, but there are so many ways crunchies destroy, and have absolutely buisiness in soft, chewy, or otherwise squishy foods. My boarding school, for instance, always put onions in the macaroni cheese, which was both inexplicable and vile. I really just don't understand why anyone would want to ruin delicious things by putting dry, brittle, unwelcome things in them. Bleaugh!

I will eat just about anything, as long as it's not spicy. It's true! I'm a very adventurous eater, but unfortunately I am limited by my inability to injest spicy foods. This is actually very troubling, because I'd love to try as many exotic and interesting things as possible, but as most of the truly weird (and/or delicious) things are made with peppers and spices, I can't. Woe. I try to make up for this lack by eating things like natto and uni, and other such foul smelling, ugly looking, and just plain bizarre food. Whooot.

I'm a very stereotypical Virgo, aka Procrastinating Perfectionist. If procrastination were an art, I could be in the Louvre. Ha ha ha. :) I'm also highly self-critical, cynical, and a hopeless romantic. Yep, totally a Virgo. I just wish I had some tidyness as well, that'd be swell. Who ever heard of a messy Virgo? Well, now you have, cause I'm a slob. *laughs* (Surprisingly enough, I'm extremely tidy and and neat at work. Maybe because everyone's watching?)

I doodle on everything. I'm really not a talented artist (at all), but I've been drawing on things since I could hold a pencil. I mostly doodle animals, and human faces. I draw in margins, all over notebooks, on post-its, napkins, absolutely anywhere. Usually I'm bored, but sometimes it's because it makes me happy. Mostly out of boredom though. *grins*

Wasn't that interesting? :) I thought so too.

And now, here's one for you! If you have the time and inclination, I would love it if you could fill out this little questionare, so I can know you better. Also, I need book and music recommendations. Tee hee. *grins impishly*

*laughs* YAY my geekery is both giddy and not seen enough, this makes me feel wonderfully happy. In my head I feel like nothing I say could ever be appreciated, thanks for reminding me how silly I am. *grins sheepishly*

Chewitel Iselfor (or, uhmm, however you spell it) is SO yummy in Kinky Boots. Such a delightful film.

I love pouncing people! Especially excessingly cute girls in coffee shops. *grins*

My current musicals addiction would be the European ones, because the English ones at the moment really are disappointingly boring and regurgitated.

My big ones at the moment are by Kunze and Levay: Tanz der Vampire (based on Polanski film "The Fearless Vampire Killers"), Elisabeth (based on the life of Empress Elisabeth) and Rebecca (based on the du Maurier book and it has an English demo :D)

European theatre is so shiny :) Give the choice of Broadway and the West End, I would go for European theatre instead. The talent in Eastern Europe especially is embarrassingly good. Chap in my icon is one of them :)

Oooh, you met Douglas? I was so gutted when I heard he'd died, you know - I mean, really gutted, like I'd been punched in the stomach. I was with friends in London, and it was on the news, but I don't think they really knew who he was, so it was weird... Like a really bad thing had just happened but I was the only one who'd noticed. I still really miss him. Love Last Chance to See too, and I would have used my kakapo icon for this, but I appear to have accidentally removed it. Must rectify that later. :)

Be sure to update us on your next Neil encounter!

I will try to answer some of those questions next - good way to avoid work, yay!

I really need a Kakapo icon. :) (I knew you were one of the few Good Ones Wot Knew It, btw ;-)

I met him first at a lecture/signing for Mostly Harmless in 1992, and again for a incredibly intimate gathering to discuss Starship Titanic with Terry Jones in 1998. I was sitting right next to him, and kept bumping my knee on his leg, which was both amazing and mortifying. *giggles* (It was actually terribly sad, how small the audience was, just a handful people sitting together at a makeshift bar in the bottom of a clothing shop. I felt both honoured to be so close to my idols and angry that so few people had come.)

I can't wait to read your answers! *squeeeze*

DONE IT!

A couple of months ago I read The Line Between and fell in love with Peter S. Beagle all over again.

I can not stand crunchy things in my squishy foods. Yes! Though not to the same extent. Mostly it's just chopped celery that gets me. Especially in tuna or potato salad. I hate going along with my nice soft food and being surprised by a crunch. My mother, on the other hand, likes it for just that reason. Go figure.

Why hallo there new friend! *hugs* :D

I love Dark City. I hope you're not too surprised by this. *grins* It was one of my first dvd purchases, waaaaaay back in 1998! I'm sure you really wanted to know that. *giggles*

YAY Star Trek! I'm a hyuuuuuge Trekker as well. TNG mostly, with a large helping of DS9 and sprinkling of Voyager. I like TOS well enough, but it isn't my favourite. I do have a massive soft spot for ST:IV though, as my family friend plays the head of the plexiglass company. *beams proudly*
Oh, and I totally just worked for the Star Trek tour that was at the Queen Mary the past few months. *smug*

I haven't heard of Content, but if its a good comic, I'm so there. I love ComicCon!

I can't believe you filled out that quiz, that was so nice of you! Welcome to my wacky world :D

Thanks. I recently started re-watching DS9. I could write volumes about Dark City, so I'll stop myself here.

Yeah, Comicon is the cat's bananas.
