Yesterday I saw the film version of Chicago. It was better than expected, but still nothing in comparison to the stage show. Everyone was very good, except of course for that squinty eyed toothpick Renee Zellwigger. Every time she was on screen (which was, unfortunately nearly every scene) I cringed and felt like punching something. God, I hate her. I read a terrific article in The Guardian newspaper by a woman who was sickened by the fact that she won a Golden Globe last week, and called her a number of delightfully insulting names, like Mr Magoo and my favourite, an 'insipid chipmunk'. How utterly appropriate. :)
The best performance in the film for me was from Queen Latifah. I really hope this gives her career a boost, because she definitely deserves it. She was a wonderful Mama Morten, and was unbelievably sexy singing 'When You're Good To Mama'. I don't know how she does it -- she's bigger than me but she always looks so gorgeous. It's so unfair! I'd give anything to have her confidence, she's just amazing.

I bought the BBC radio adaptation of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, and so far I'm liking it very much. The voices are all very good (except for Lee Scoresby's accent, which is a terribly fake American one), especially Lyra's and Pantalaimon. Pan is SO CUTE, I wasn't expecting him to be so adorable but his voice just makes me want to hug and squish him all day. I wish I had a daemon. *sighs wistfully*
I also found out that the stage version will open at the National Theatre in the summer! Am veryvery excited about it. :)

I was absolutly gutted that I missed the last part of His Dark Materials last week. I was in a book shop, picked up the all in one volume of the book to look at the price, and then remembered that I was supposed to be taping it. I then said 'oh blast!' very loudly and made about 6 people look at me like I was crazy. Probably becuase they've never heard a teenager say 'blast' before.

Aaaaanyway... from the two episodes I heard I agree with you, it was fab. My mum even started listening (she hates fantasy)and what's more she liked it!

Can't bring myself to see Chigao, despite prodding from several friends. Richard Gere, Rene whatsherface... *shudder*

I loved the radio adaptation of His Dark Materials too - except for the person who made the noises for Mrs. Coulter's daemon - he was so obviously a person making monkey noises!

Theatrical version *intrigued* will have to find out more about this... I can't imagine how they're going to stage a lot of it - daemons changing form?? It seems more cinematic to me - glad there's a film script in the pipeline and the LOTR stable are producing :):)

I thought Catherine Zeta Jones wiped the floor with Renee in every scene. She is brilliant. But Queen Latifah is even better. Wow! She got my share of bosoms, and most of the front row as well. What a class act!

I'm curious about the stage version too, I can't wait to see how they tackle all the problems of adapting it. I assume they're going to use puppets of some sort for the daemons, either Lion King-esque ones or shadows behind a screen. Something like that anyway. It certainly will be an exciting surprise!

An adaptation? Of Pullman's books? ...guh. ::dissolves into a puddle of avarice:: I wish America had a good radio station like BBC. Lucasfilm has done some interesting things with George Lucas' properties, but that's really the only equivalent I can think of this side of the pond.

I'd been wanting to see Chicago, but I've been wary of it. I generally dislike screen adaptations of stage musicals. "Little Shop of Horrors" and the recent version of "The Fantasticks" are the only two I can think of that I remotely like. But I think I might catch this one when it's at the discount theatre, It looks interesting.

I didn't mind Renee Zellwinger as much as you seem to, but personally, I would've loved to see what Kirsten Dunst would've done with the role. Have you seen "The Cat's Meow"? Her acting in that one blew me away, I was very surprised/impressed. Queen Latifa was the bomb, and I also quite liked Zeta-Jones, much to my surprise. Mmmm, "All That Jazz"....yummy.

I have loved Kirsten Dusnt since I saw her in Interview with a Vampire -- she was the best thing about that film, and she still never fails to impress me, whatever she does. Is Cat's Meow the film with Eddie Izzard as Charlie Chaplin? It hasn't come out here yet but I'm dying to see it. Mmmmmmmm Eddie Izzard...*drool*

You can still listen to the BBC adaption (I think) on their website, but if not you can buy the CDs. There are alot of changes from the book (mostly with bringing plot points that aren't mentioned until much later on to an earlier part in the story) but it's still very enjoyable.

I was wary of Chicago too, but I knew I had to see it, despite the irritating presence of the chipmunkfaced slag. *giggles* I love LSOH, the film is so good! I'd give anything to play one of the Ronnettes in the stage show. :)

I very well might be in London this summer--gotta take a trip to pick which grad school I attend (assuming I get into them), so will do that. Bwhahaa. Entering a contest for a free trip to UK also. Hee. As for Cat's Meow, that's the one, and it's awesome. Did you ever see Cold Comfort Farm? If not, rent it AT ONCE. But, the woman who played Mary Smiling is also in Cat's Meow. And Kirstin Dunst kicks arse in it. Yes yes yes!
