I never have been much into fanfiction, mostly because I went from my "pretentious, politically radical high school kid" phase to my "slightly less pretentious writer-artiste bitch" early college years about the time I found out about it. I don't look down on people who write it anymore. That's just obnoxious and snotty. But I don't write it myself, and I probably never will. I'm of the opinion that the author who created a character is the only one who can get that character exactly right, so I'm uncomfortable trying to do so. I'm not averse to reading it, though. I have found some stunningly beautiful works of fanfiction over the years, and the bad stuff is too funny to be believed.
Slash irritates me more. To me it just smacks of that pre-teen habit of snickering at anything the slightest bit suggestive. I mean, some times good friends are just good friends and that's all there is to it. I don't mind it if it's an element of a good story (believe it or not, I found a Smeagol/Deagol slash that amazed me, mostly the romantic relationship was barely part of the story), but the ones that are all about the relationship bug me. Particularly the ones that have rivals falling for each other. I'm sorry, but I just don't believe that Harry and Draco are going to stop hating each other just because the author wants them to snog.Probably it's because I'm so jealously possessive of the characters in my writing, but as an author it would piss me off to see people taking that degree of liberty with my creation (see? I'm still not completely done being a snobby bitch of a writer).
But then, the decree making me the person who gets to decide what others can or can't write about seems to have been lost in the mail. There are probably people out there who hate my writing too, so I should just leave well enough alone.
