Exactly.
I admit to being highly pretentious and looking down on fanfic writers too, until I found out ashfae wrote the most incredible stories, and she introduced me to a few other great writers (all about Ranma 1/2) so I couldn't do that anymore. That was 5 years ago, and until very recently, I pretty much still assumed most everyone was rubbish, and I had seen the only exceptions. Some of my LJ friends write beautiful stories, so now I have to accept that there are good fanfic authors lurking out there, and I had previously only been exposed (with a few exceptions, as I said) to the the worst of them.
I still find that most of the truly awful authors like to write slash. But then, so do some of the best. It's all very confusing. *G*
BTW -- I still haven't left my incredibly pretentious stage. I suppose it's about time I did, neh? ;-)
