Wow, another update! I'm spankin'! *giggles*

It's not really an update. I just thought I would participate in this interesting meme thingy. Since I don't read fanfics I'm not really coming from that perspective, I hope you don't mind. But I think I can guarantee to have some outrageously unpopular opinions. Wooohooo! ;-)

[Star Trek: The Next Generation]
ST:TNG, I love you dearly, but if I have to hear 'In the late 20th century...' to describe something one more time I will disavow you and swear my alligence to your archnemesis Babylon 5.

Riker was a giant Space Slag, who was not sexy but a carrier of disease across the galaxy. That plague that wiped out the once peaceful planet of Euphoria Minor? Yep, that was Riker.

[The X-Files]
Agent Pendrell was the perfect man for Scully, and they would have lived happily ever after if hadn't been for that whole dying thing. (Curse you Chris Carter!)

[Stargate: SG-1]
I love Jonas, and so should you. JONAS IS COOL. Jonas is intelligent, adorable, charismatic and a fun addition to SG-1. He is not, I repeat not an emotionally vapid Gary-Stu with a Deus ex Machina complex. Jonas rules, and quite frankly Daniel (though I still crush on him madly) pretty much SUCKS since his timely return from The Great Beyond.

[Harry Potter]
Harry is too fucked up to have a girlfriend. Why do you even pretend otherwise? If you want to write an AU fic where he is not emotionally disturbed, go right ahead. But if you want to remain Canon PLEASE do not ignore that fact that he has suffered, and continues to suffer on a daily basis. Just imagine what that does to a person! His entire life has been one misery after another, and now he is in the middle of a war which he did not want, yet he finds himself the centre of all the action. He has FAR too much on his mind to be bothered with romance of any kind, and occasionally barely even has time for his friends. Why on earth should anyone want to force him into a relationship? Pity the poor child who gets saddled with this stubborn, irascible, bi-polar saviour of the world.

[LOTR]
Pippin is NOT stupid. GAH! Leave my Pip alone, dammit. He is comic relief, but that has never been his only function. He is not one-dimensional in any way. He does, in fact SAVE MIDDLE EARTH. So just shut up about my beloved being childish comic relief.

[Buffy]
I'm sorry, but however much I appreciate that Willow/Tara was the best, most realistic homosexual relationship on tv, Oz was a zillion times better than Tara.

Spike lost all interesting qualities when he became Buffy's Bitch. Where has the man who once called people 'Happy Meals with legs' gone!

[Doctor Who]
The Enemy Within kicked arse, despite the fact that it's so Americanized, and has a kiiiiiss, and Eric Roberts as The Master. I was one of the first people in the world to know what it would look like, and if you could have seen how much love and attention went into making this production, you would appreciate it too. And besides, Eight is hot. So there. :-P

[Every Fandom]
Never ever show off your squicky twincest/beastiality/whatever fanfic or photomanip to the real people you've based it on. EVER. It's just plain rude! How would YOU like it if someone wrote a story about you and your brother or your mum or your best friend (or all three at once)? You wouldn't like it very much, would you. If you want to write it, GO AHEAD! Knock yourself out. Write or draw as much as your bursting little heart desires. But don't pretend that your objects of desire share your passion! If they want to see it themselves, and maybe have a good laugh, let them do it in private and on their own terms. Is that too much to ask? No, of course not.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot this one.
Two people can be in a loving, devoted relationship and not be shagging each other. This goes for both straight and gay relationships. I think people have gotten so carried away with making sure that homosexual relationships are seen and heard that they're seeing them everywhere. I'm certainly not saying that you shouldn't write a story where Frodo and Sam, or Sirius and Remus or whomever are together, but for the love of Varda do not say that it's Canon. As much as I might want to believe Picard and Crusher have been doing the nasty for years, I know it's not Canon, and I don't pretend otherwise. Why should it be so with other fictional characters we know and love?
In your imagination, anything can happen. And this is a very good thing. But if it's not what the author imagined, don't force your ideas on his creation. Okay? :)

Well, that was fun now, wasn't it. *grins*

Agent Pendrell!!

Oh, how I miss Agent Pendrell!!

A very good friend of mine used to call herself Scully, and I was her Pendrell... but not like that! ;)

And I agree with every wise little word you said about Harry Potter, Buffy and LoTR.

I will always prefer Oz to Tara (Although, God, she deserved a better death. On the upside, at least she wasn't dissed as badly as Anya.) and Angel and Buffy together, over Buffy and Spike...

Poor Pippin. When will the fools learn that being Comic Relief is a good thing? I plan to go one better than Pippin and become a Comic Relief Sidekick someday! Am taking applications from superhero types as we speak *nods*

And yes, Eight is indeed hot. I haven't seen the TVM but my underdog-defending instincts tend to sway me in its favour, poor thing.

And re:Every Fandom...

So. Damn. True. *WORSHIPS*

I don't really know wheather my fandom opinions are unpopular or not! I can generally find someone somewhere who agrees with me.

In response to yours:

ST:TNG Ha ha! You are so right about Riker! He;s always made me shudder.

Harry Potter: I don't think anyone who writes Harry into a relationship doubts that he is traumatised. That spurs the little sadists on I think!

LoTR: Yes! Except, Sam saved the world. In my head anyway.

Buffy: Ah, I'm afraid I never liked Oz that much. I couldn't get past the whole killer beast every full moon thing. Ick.

As for Spike - I am actually ashamed of liking season 7 Spike because it makes me a stupid little teeny fangirl who liked her men to be all angst continuously...but I can't help it! Season six was just annoying though. GET OVER IT MAN! Er, Vampire. Whatever.

Doctor Who: The Enemy Within is brilliant. End of.

Every Fandom: God, I know. What on earth were they thinking of? (I think we're both thinking about the same incident here)

What is a skit?

Date: 2003-11-24 02:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] angelislington.livejournal.com

A skit is a brief improvisational scene, usually made on the spot with almost no rehearsal whatsoever.

A sketch is written down, revised, revised some more, rehearsed, and then performed.

VERYVERY DIFFERENT. :)

Och now girl, i fancied Mulder :P
And yes Spike was better when he was BAAAAD >:)~ a yum-yum!

Meh i dunno how to defend old Picard in Next Gen...i just love him up to his shiny bald head.

Also, while im here - What are good Tori songs to get?

Wowzers, she agrees! :D

I loved Agent Pendrell. When he died I weeped for almost an hour afterwards. I was just so shocked that Chris Carter would take away my beloved ickle Pendrellpants! *sniff*

I'm really quite stunned you actually agree with me on so many things...*giggles happily*

Well of course I fancied Mulder. Especially in glasses, eating sunflower seeds. Mmmmmmm.

But Pendrell was just so CUTE! I adored his puppy dog eyes and unrequited love for Scully.

Picard is too honourable. That's why he never spent his free time shagging Beverly. ;-)

Oooooh Tori! Well, let's see. I'll try to give examples of the different styles of songs she does.

Precious Things
Silent All These Years
Etienne
Professional Widow
Raspberry Swirl
Bells for Her
Yes, Anastasia
Virginia
A Sorta Fairytale
Carbon
Fire on the Side
Cloud on my Tongue

...That should be good for now. :)

Stunned?! Why stunned? We are both women of exquisite taste and intelligence! :D

I also should have noted that I agree wholeheartedly about the relationship thing, too... I have no problem with people fantasizing, but do not try to tell me that Tolkien thought Sam and Frodo were gay - I don't believe that would ever have crossed his wonderful British mind...

See, it's like in my head I'd rather picture MovieAragorn with MovieEowyn - to me a much better match than MovieArwen. But when I'm reading the books, I'm glad it all works out the way it does... :)

>We are both women of exquisite taste and intelligence!

Huzzah! I couldn't have put it better myself. *giggles* :D

And yes, it's absolutely wonderful to fantasize (gods know *I* do it every moment of every day), but don't loose sight of what is real and what isn't. Books are meant to be taken into your heart and made special by the feelings you associate with them, and if your private thoughts tell you Frodo and Sam were together, then that's fine. But it's not what Tolkien felt.
I honestly don't see what's so difficult about making the distinction.

*SHAGS*

I LOVE YOU.

Can I add "Don't be so fucking precious about your OTP that you rip apart a jaw-droppingly good movie just because the director didn't subscribe to your particular viewpoint"?

I could rant for pages about this and some other particularly infuriating fandom tendencies, but I have close friends I don't want to offend :)

Babylon Five kicks ass. It really does. I've been a Next Gen fan since forever, but B5 kicks ass. Ohsogood is it. Yes yes.

There are people who were suckered into thinking Riker was sexy? What a bizarre notion.

*APPLAUSE FOR THE LAST!*

But I disagree with most of the others. *Gryn*

*ahem*

Very good. I'm not the only one who thought Riker a great slag. Dirty.

How I miss Pendrill. What was wrong with him?! Why did he have to be killed off in such a manner?! Woe is meeeeeeeeeeeee

Thanks for sticking up for Oz. I know nothing about him, except that he's my beloved Seth, and that I'm *almost* willing to systematically track down and watch every episode of Buffy that he was in. Especially the shirtless one. Yes, deffinitely. Now, I wonder which episode that was? *ahem* Looking in your direction, fangirl

On the cannon note, I will NEVER EVER EVER believe it anywhere within the realm of possibility for Draco and Harry to be friends/lovers. I just can't buy that a pissant like Draco would EVER do anything that would earn Harry's respect/friendship/love or whatever. I've read a million fanfics where this has happened, and I'm sorry, I'll never buy it. Even if JKR should deem to write it, I won't buy it.

Buffy: Word. Tara was pretty cool, but I never got over Oz leaving.

X-Files: Meh. I'm too resistant to any and all partners for Mulder and Scully except each other. They were my OTP before I knew what OTP's were.

Pairings: Yeah, I like to stubbornly insist on Frodo/Sam's canonness...it just makes me happy for some reason...but really, I don't think anyone can seriously say it's canon. Tollers, Elbereth bless him, was a staunch English Catholic who grew up in the late 19th and early 20th century, and I can't see him intentionally writing a homosexual relationship, alas.

Really, for all pairings, it's fun to be all "theirloveissocanon", but unless the author affirms it, it's really not.

Harry is too fucked up to have a girlfriend.

Do they not have wizard therapists? I do worry about him having to cope with all the crap on his own like this, or at least I would if he had a few more dimensions to his character. Especially when his elders and betters seem to spend a lot of time a) playing mind games with him for the sake of a plot twist, b) egging him on in an irresponsible manner, c) bullying him d) generally behaving unprofessionally. In my opionion, Mrs Weasley is probably the only adult in his immediate vicinity with a lick of sense (also Remus, but he really needs to get his act together) but she has too much on her plate already. Is it too much to ask to get Harry an appointment with someone qualified to deal with people who've been through this kind of terrible trauma? Is it???

Pippin is NOT stupid. No, he most certainly isn't. He is however insane. With love of YOU, Nevvie!

Oz was a zillion times better than Tara. Tara really annoyed me, she was just so droopy and wet. I wished she didn't, but she did. Oz was fab.

The Enemy Within kicked arse I need to see this again, actually. I've been having a few nostalgic Doctor Who moments lately. I was one of the first people in the world to know what it would look like, Ooh, do tell! Eight is hot Mmmm. Remember when I saw him in Costa's in Milton Keynes? Did you see that picture of his back my friend took? Ooh, he had Orangina and sandwiches! *thinks fond thoughts*

don't pretend that your objects of desire share your passion! Amen to that!

if it's not what the author imagined, don't force your ideas on his creation.
Hmm, I find this interesting. I think it was possibly the obvious paradox of this that drew me into the world of slash in the first place. Because I read LOTR, and a bit of my brain was going, well Frodo and Sam are clearly in love. And another bit of my brain was going, er... I think you'll find they clearly aren't. Like, context? And the first bit of my brain went, yes I know, but anyway. And that bit defected and went and looked up other weirdos on the Internet. The End.

But you're right -- it's clearly a good thing not to let your personal obsessions and oddnesses take over the bit of your brain capable of objective thought, lest you become a scary person that everyone tries to avoid.

Well. That was fun. :)

Riker has creeped me out since I was a small child. I am such a second generation Trekkie. Cheers for my mom!

And as for Pippin, he WAS a bit daft at first (I'm thinking water in pockets stuff here...his foolishness was a function of his young age, though). He actually annoyed me a little bit when I first started reading, but as his character progressed he became utterly awesome. You may continue with your Peregrin adoration. ;)

Ugh. See, it makes me sad that this is an UNPOPULAR fandom opinion. This should be one of the most popular opinions of all. It should be a rule of conduct. It should be a law. It should be something everyone agrees on. Because forcing something like that on people (especially when they're 17 year old boys!) is most definitely wrong and disrespectful.

I've come to the conclusion that I need some stronger opinions about fandoms in general. I'm a bit too generally happy with everything that goes on.

Oh! Except of course for your brilliant, incisive and totally spot-on final remarks. Squick yourself if you must, but don't inflict it on others if they don't ask for it. And that includes me. *blerk*
