I have a tattoo!

I've been thinking of getting one for at least fifteen years, but I've always been too afraid, and (of course) I couldn't decide what I wanted. But now I have one and I couldn't be more pleased with how well it turned out, and how much it means to me.

It's a gorgeous dark purple (slightly darker than my journal background) and located just above my ankle on my left leg. It's tengwar, and says 'tookish' -- there wasn't any real translation into Sindarin, so it's just the phonetic spelling of the phrase with elvish writing, but I don't mind at all, it's what the word means to me that matters. I'm a Took forever and always. :)

Yesterday I spent the day with [livejournal.com profile] achtung_meggy and (all too briefly) [livejournal.com profile] undomiel_tari, and they were very supportive and reassuring about getting it done, as they have tattoos as well. Meggy's friend Yanni did it for me, and even though it HURT LIKE HELL (oh ye gods the pain) it still wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting, although this is probably because I made sure the position was on a fleshy bit, not bone. I was screaming inside at the time, but I can see how they can become highly addicting, as I'm already contemplating what I want to do next (a circle of stars around my ankle like a bracelet, the White Tree of Gondor on my shoulder, Dave Mckean's artwork for the cover of Neverwhere...), isn't that strange? People with obsessive personalities should never be allowed to get one, it only leads to trouble. *grins*

Remember when I saw Graham Norton in December 2003 and was on tv? The same company had another live taping and I got to see Tracey Ullman's new show on thursday night, which will be shown on HBO in may, so you get to look for me in the audience once again! I adore Tracey Ullman, she's so immensely talented, I'd give anything for her improvisation skills, and I certainly wasn't disappointed by her show, which was basically her autobiography acted out with some of the characters she's created over the years to help tell the story. I believe it's called 'Tracey Ullman: Live and Exposed' and you have to watch it when it airs, I know you'll laugh yourself stupid like I did. :)

This week I also saw the new Muppets Wizard of Oz movie (when I should have been working, but I was having a severely crap day and frankly I didn't care, it was only an hour anyway), and I can safely say that while these certainly weren't the Muppets I grew up with, they're still Muppets, and anything with Muppets is always a good thing. It wasn't a finished film, there was still alot of CGI work that needed to be done, but it still played very well, and was (mostly) entertaining. Ashanti wasn't the best Dorothy, but she looked good, and related well to the puppets, and kids will probably like her. Kermit was the Scarecrow, Gonzo the Tin Thing, Fozzie the Lion, and Miss Piggy, in her strangest yet seemingly most obvious role ever, a Dominatrix Biker-Babe Wicked Witch of the West. Yeah, it's really not the Muppets we used to know. There was a seriously disturbing scene with Gonzo and the Wizard of Oz, when the Wiz appears to him as a giant chicken, asking if his girlfriend Camilla had 'a beak as big as mine' or 'great big flapping wings' -- in a provoctively sexual voice that was extremely creepy and made me squirm. Maybe it'll look (and hopefully feel) differently in the finished product. But for the most part, it was rather fun, with some hummable songs, good jokes and welcome cameos from all our favourite characters. I don't know when it will air (most likely this summer), but I hope it does well so we can look forward to more Muppety goodness in the future.

It's beautiful and very appropriate! Darn it. Am thinking of getting a second one and thought it might be a spiral but you mentioned the White Tree of Gondor and darnit, that sounds nice too :-)

Thank you so much!

I'm completely enamoured of the White Tree, and even though it would be far larger (and more painful) than anything else I could have, I think it's what I really want; it's just so beautiful, and gives me so much hope. :)

Lovely! I like it a lot.

I've been looking at designs for #4 lately--I want the Scorpio symbol, somewhat stylized but still recognizable, no actual scorpions--but I'm not seeing anything that really strikes me yet. Plenty of time to deliberate, of course.

Oo, that is lovely! As someone who is both allergic to pain and cannot settle on one design to last the rest of her life for the life of her, I applaud you!

(And I promise your package will go out on Monday! I have it all wrapped up and addressed on my floor, I've just been too scatterbrained and poor to send it yet!)

WHEEEEEE!!!! I love the tattoo. I've wanted *something* for about 20+ years but have never been able to come up with anything I'd want on me forever so I'm still mulling it over. At this point, it'll probably never happen but I *love* yours. :)

I'm with you on Tracey Ullman, I've been a fan of hers for forever -- I even have the Broke my heart in 17 pieces album on vinyl. Sheesh, I'm old. The new show sounds brilliant though. Every time I've seen a show that's supposedly being taped for broadcast on HB0 (specificially Eric Idle's Exploits Python tour and Eddie Izzard's Sexie), they never get shown. *glares at HBO*

I've heard mixed things about the Oz film -- I'll probably wait to see it on cable. I think it's never going to be the same without Jim and especially now that Disney's bought the Muppet franchise, although I think they'll do okay with it. It's just not the same with different writers etc. I'm more interested to see what Henson is going to do now that they've decided to focus on more interesting things like Mirrormask. :)

I am the biggest baby when it comes to pain, believe me. I am truly shocked that I did not pass out and instead kept talking to Megan and her friend the nice tattoo artist. I still don't understand how anyone can sit there for hours however. Mine took about 10 minutes because it was so small, and it seemed like ages. People who get entire body parts done in one sitting are craaaaaaaaaaaaaazy. *G*

I saw so many hilariously bad scorpion designs at the tattoo studio (scorpion bodies with flaming skulls/naked lady heads were particuarly amusing), I certainly hope you don't decide on anything quite so interesting. *smirks*

I do really like the symbol for Virgo, and I'm exceedingly Virgoen (is that even a word?), so maybe I'll get something like that too. Oh, the ideas! My brain hurts. *giggles*

Hahaha, oh MAN. Yes, exactly. I don't want any of that shit. I did actually see one design I kind of liked with a stylized "tribal" scorpion, spare and black, but it struck me as a little too trendy. No, I just want the symbol. I myself am very Scorpio.

Nevvie, are you still in SoCal? I try to call you on your cell and I always get your machine. I wanna see you!!! :(

I really like that tattoo. I've wanted to get one for a while but I dunno what I want. I think I know where I want it, though. Did you get it done at a place or at someone's house (since you said your friend's friend did it)?

Disney buying the Muppets has really spoiled quite alot of the original Henson charm, but I won't give up on them just yet. *G*

Lisa Henson seems to know what she's doing, and if Neil trusts her, that's good enough for me. :)

I would desperately love to get something Neil-related tattooed, but there are far too many choices, and I doubt if anything would be small enough to translate well onto my body -- I don't want any large, in your face tattoos, or anything in a prominent place, so that rather narrows the field down a bit. The flaming design around the Neverwhere title would of course be my #1 choice, but there's just no way I could ever be so daring and courageous. *sheepish grin*

Pretty! I'm way too chicken to get a tattoo. Seriously.

Now I'm frightened of the Muppet movie. I hope you're right about it being different in the finished product! The last thing they put out that I actually liked without reservation was A Muppet Christmas Carol, so we'll just have to see...

I have a triple crescent--something like )0( only bigger and more colourful--on my right ankle. I got it about ten years ago at a little place in a strip mall in Florida, with my four kids holding my hands and giving me moral support. I love it to this day.
