Jan. 23rd, 2003 09:01 pmLast saturday I went to a Lord of the Rings party! Wheeeeeeee!
The utterly delightful
mirabehn and
evil_nick decided to have an Entmoot of their own and invited loads of friends over to watch The Two Towers and enjoy an evening of fannish splendour. I didn't know anyone there except Elly and Nick, but all their friends were so nifty it didn't really matter. I was, of course, feeling extremely awkward as everyone else knew each other, but for the most part everyone was very friendly and tried to make me feel comfortable and welcome.
After watching the Two Towers in Reading town centre we all went to Elly and Nick's place in a little suburb called Thatcham, which just happens to be right near Upper Bucklebury! How insanely cool is that. *giggles* Their house dates back to the 17th century and was lovingly decorated with a LOTR theme. The living room was Rohan, with beautiful banners made by
kmazzy, the bathroom was The Dead Marshes and had faces 'drowned' in the bathtub, the bedroom was Fangorn forest, complete with rather scary portrait of Treebeard, and the upstairs room (hidden behind a very appropriate 'Black Gate') was Barad-Dur. All around the house were pinned up quotes from the book, and the BBC radio series was playing softly in the kitchen. It was all exceedingly wonderful.
Everyone got dressed up, and some of the costumes were amazing --
the_alchemist (who is very spiffy and fun, I can't wait to get to know her better) made an extraordinary reproduction of Eowyn's Helm's Deep costume, complete with a real sword! Elly was Frodo, Nick was Eomer,
purplepiano (great name!) was Merry,
kmazzy was a terrific Nazgul...everyone looked positively spiffing. Except me. I lost my Pippin scarf and coat, so I had no costume. I just wore the shirt I bought when I saw the stage version of The Hobbit with
thecheekymonkey last year, which said HOBBIT in really big letters, and let the words cloak me in a costume of hobbityness. I know I don't need a costume to be hobbity, but it certainly would have been nice. Curse my inability to sew! I felt a very foolish Took indeed.
We had pasta and nibbles, and an 'Icingard' cake, and a suspiciously green Dead Marshes punch, talked alot about a great many things, played a fun game of Pass the Parcel where with each layer of wrapping paper removed we had to answer a Tolkien related question about someone in the room, i.e. Who is the most Hobbit-like, Who would most like to give Grima a swift kick in the bum, etc. We had two Tolkien trivia books and had great fun (at least, I did) answering quite difficult questions about all things to do with Middle Earth. Although I did do rather well, I kept embarrassing myself by stumbling over questions that I knew the answers. For example: To answer the question 'How were the Simarils made' I wanted to say: 'Feanor, greatest of all the Noldor, harnessed the perfect Light of the Two Trees of Valinor, and fashioned it into three shining jewels, which were the only remnants of the Laurelin and Telperion when the beast Ungoliant came forth bidden by Morgoth, to destroy the Trees and bring darkness upon Arda, and extinguished the Light forever.' But instead I said something like 'Trees...light...jewelthingy....yeah.' *rolls eyes* Gah. Sometimes I make myself out to be such an idiot. *laughs*
Thank you so much Elly and Nick, for inviting me to such a marvellous party. *hugs and kisses* :))
In case you've wondered where I've been, I haven't been able to use my computer all week because the hard drive is completely shagged. In fact, I'm not supposed to be using it now, but oh well. *grins* I hadn't been online for only two days, and I had to scroll through over 300 LJ entries. That just isn't right. *laughs* (I swear one of these days I'm going to pass out from lack of sleep or food reading all of them. ;-)
Of course, I do love making new friends -- please welcome
siriel,
winters_rose and the (in)famous
sunnysky!
I just found out that on 1 Feb the Sci-Fi London Film Festival will not only be showing the documentary Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams, but Sniper 470, the infamous short film staring Billy Boyd! YES!!!! *leaps into the air with glee* :D
Anyone want to come with me? :)
