Well, I was going to write a very long and detailed rant about HOW MUCH I HATE THE BLOODY TUBE STRIKES but I'm just too tired to bother. Here is a brief summary for Americans and other aliens: every few months London Underground and/or British Rail decide to cancel all services in hopes that by bringing chaos they will force the government to give their employees more money. The train drivers already make more than nurses and teachers, and STILL they are not satisfied, so they continue make life a total misery for Londoners. Hurrah.


I've been thinking alot about online personalities since reading bluerhapsody's journal entry a few days ago. I've always said that my online persona is me, that I make no effort to change or disguise who I am -- what you see is what you get. And this is mostly true. Anyone who has met me will say that I am the same bubbly person in real life as I am online. There is one major difference between Online Me and the Real Me: Online Me is popular. You might not think this is a big difference, but to me, it really is. I've never been popular -- hell, I didn't even have a real friend until I was 17 -- so to have so many wonderful friends online makes me blissfully happy, I don't care that you might be 10 or 10,000 miles away, you are all special and make me feel like a worthy human being.
Now I think you all need to start a campain to enlighten the clueless masses to my magnificence, and get me as popular off the computer as I am online. *grins* (I'm thinking you should start small, leaflets perhaps...;-)


In other news, the new Buffy series premiered last night in the US. Not here though. *much pouting*
I did order the soundtrack to Once More, With Feeling (the musical Buffy episode), and should have it by friday. And I found out Anthony Stewart Head has his own album, woohooo! Mmmmmmmmmm Giles. *drool*


I know everyone is getting this for an answer, but it really is SO me. Especially the 'embraces the snarky as well as the epic' bit. Geeks rule! :D

Metro Transit workers here in Los Angeles staged a major strike about a year ago. It was right at the beginning of the new school semester, and so many students had to drop out for that semester, because they couldn't make their classes-- the strike went on for MONTHS, and the stupid transit union was making the most ridiculous demands! It was insane. I know that strikes are occasionally necessary when working conditions are truely bad, but people just can't seem to be able to seperate "bad" from "not the perfect life I'd like to live".

Gah!

as for Buffy last night...eh... I have a feeling later on down the line, it's going to be a very important eposide, but for right now, I'm as confused as hell. The Firefly premire was AWESOME though! Do you/will you get Firefly in the UK? I am so in love with that show... Joss is a genius.

I have no idea if we'll get Firefly -- maybe the SciFi channel will pick it up, but it probably won't be shown for at least a year. I'm glad it's turning out to be a good one though!

The last time I was in LA my dad (who works downtown) tried to convince me to use the new Metro system, but it scared me silly for some strange reason. Maybe it was the fact that no one was using it at the time, and I was worried all the skyscrapers would come crashing down on my head but no one would know I was there...*giggles*
Do people actually use the Metro now? I'm pleased to hear that Angelinos are finally ditching their cars and using public transport. Even if it doesn't always work properly. *grins*

The only people who actually use Metro, really, are poor people with no cars, students, or teenagers. Occasionally concsientious middle-aged business men will ride, but only if there's a stop very near to where they work... nobody wants to walk in LA, and the traffic's just as bad as ever.

I know how you feel about the online popularity thing. It's really tough to be the same person online and offline, when it's so easy to be something you're not. And I think that people are drawn to that sort of honesty...which is why people like you are so popular online. :D

I don't think that I am that much different offline, either. The only big difference is that I am much more outgoing online than I am off. I just have a hard time talking face to face with people for some reason. But sometimes it depends on my mood...

Heh. In Israel, there are strikes all the time. Eveyone strikes - the phone company, the bus drivers, the construction workers, the teachers, the students, the airlines . . . and everyone just shakes thier head and mutters. Major inconvenience all around.

As to the other - it's the same, sort of, with me. I think I'm more myself online, because I can be, because I won't scare people away - and therefore, in a way, people i know onlnie and not in real life at all see more of th real me than the people I see everyday. Crazy how that works, eh?

We should all get together some time, all of us online friends, and then we'd all be friends in real life too, and just as popular there as we are here.

I know how you feel...I have major self-esteem issues and I don't know if they have anything to do with my unpopularity in RL, but they surely don't help fix it. it's weird because people I've met online (and even a few in RL...as in the few friends I do have) tell me I'm not as socially inept as I think I am, and even that they actually *gasp* think I'm a worthwhile person to spend time with.

I don't think my online persona is any different from my RL persona except that I don't feel afraid to speak my mind like I do face-to-face. I mean, if you read my journal that's just *me*. I don't hold back anything from there (and nay, I don't even spare all the accursed obsessive Sean thoughts that cross my mind, heh) so if you want to know the real me you just need to read that. it's one area in my life that I make no apologies for, or don't try to keep in check because I'm afraid of what people might think.

on a lighter note: I got a tie between UberLoTR Geek and LoTR Purist. :)

I HATE STRIKES. But "tube strikes" conjures up weird mental images of picketing toothpaste.

Aw, Nevvie! You are an awesome buddy! I wish I lived nearer so I could be your "real-life" friend. Lol, I mean, I totally am now, but sometimes it's good to have someone there you can talk to face-to-face.

I'm not real popular online or in real life. Haha, mediocre for me. All the way!! ^_^ ::does mediocre dance:: But, I'm getting by. You have super-duper boatloads of friends online! Wow! I have a week long training course next week, and I have to negotiate the Tube strike. Bear in mind, though, that I don't even work or live in London. So first of all I've got to GET to London. Then I've got to work for at least half an hour to Holborn. And get home again later. I'm estimating a 6am start, and an 8pm finish. Happy days...

I don't know if they aired it in the good ol' Motherland, but last year there was a twenty-fifth anniversary bash for Rocky Horror Picture show on VH1 and Anthony Stewart Head did "Sweet Transvestite" in drag - complete with corset and garters! It was too good. I've got it on tape!

This may be due to the fact that I'm not really a fan of LOTR. *ducks to avoid rotten vegetables* I used to be, years ago, and yes, I love the movie ( and Aragorn *drool* ). But I'm more into other fantasy/sci-fi now. But a geek I am, and proud of it! If you can't change what you are, you'd better learn to be proud of it, or you'll lead a totally miserable life! ;-)

About online popularity and personas: I think online communities mostly draw the people who aren't too popular IRL, for various reasons. ( For me: lack of self-esteem and almost a phobia of trying to attract attention but at the same time a huge need for attention. ) I think the ppl who really are themselves out here are the ppl who become the most popular *in the long run*. You can't fake another personality forever, or at least not a nice, caring and complex personality, and this kind of personality I think forms the *real* friendships out here.

A thing that has been kind of a problem out here in cyber-space is "RPG" versus "RL-me" opinions. I used to be a member of HOL, and there I often felt it was difficult to know what was the real opinions of the people, and what was role-playing ( especially in my House, Slytherin ). In that confusion, I kind of "defaulted" into my own personality most of the time, because that were the opinions I could stand for when the conflicts started. I think any internet community needs to be very clear on what's RPG and what's RL. OK, ppl can still lie, but for those who want to make a distinction between RPG persona and RL personality, there should be a way to show that. ( The "IC" and "OOC" abbreviations are useful... ) Personally I prefer openness and honesty, and can't have any "superficial" relationships.

I don't feel I'm a very popular person in the online universe, but I feel more appreciated here, and I have more friends here than I do IRL ( IRL I only have 2 friends and I don't see them very often ).

I wonder if some psychological research is being done on this? It would probably be fascinating!
