Oct. 22nd, 2002 03:08 amHad a very fun time with
storme this afternoon. I did a bit of shopping, and although I couldn't find a warm winter coat, I did find a pair of absolutely gorgeous dark purple velvet trousers that fit me perfectly, woohoooo! So was v.pleased about that. *G*
Also spent WAY too much money in Forbidden Planet, but I think it was worth the expense -- among other things I found a 1st edition hardcover of Charles de Lint's new novella Seven Wild Sisters, illustrated by Charles Vess, and it was signed by both of them! YEAH! Charles de Lint is one of my favourite authors, but damn does he have the most appalling signature of all time. I thought it was a meaningless scribble at first, it looks so much like Vess was just testing out the pen and making sure it worked before writing his own name, instead of the signature of a mature, creative adult. I think I'll scan and send it to
scarletmacaw for some handwriting analysis, I'm sure it'd show some fascinating results. *grins*
The Buffy symposium was...interesting. I'm not sure how else to put it. Seven women, nearly all over the age of 40 discussing the socio-political ramifications of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Most odd. The truly strange thing was that Storme and I were among the youngest people in the audience -- at least half were over the age of 45, I'm sure of it. And they all knew the episode titles and could quote just as well as me...I didn't know whether to be impressed that adults could show such an interest in this marvellous program or horrified at their obvious lack of anything approaching a life. The whole thing reminded me of some of my lectures at university, and it rather frightened me to think that if I hadn't diverted from the path I had originally chosen for myself and become an actor, I could have been one of those scary women on the panel dissecting pop culture to find it's underlying mythological significance...I still want to someday write a book, or at least a well respected essay on the importance of myths and faerie tales in modern society, but I really don't want to end up like one of these obsessed Buffy fans. Pray for me that I don't. :)
I know I shouldn't, but I feel a bit sad that only three people replied to my last journal entry. Please tell me I'm not that boring. *laughs*
I guess I'm so used to being inundated with comments lately I feel slighted when they don't appear. I know that's utterly ridiculous, you haven't forgotten me! Bah, I'm just so silly sometimes. *grins sheepishly* (This is the problem with being both a Virgo and ENFP -- you need constant reassurance that you are appreciated and adored. Being me is such a curse. ;-)
Here's an excellent survey thingy from
sunfighter31.
1. What's the first thing you remember wanting to be when you grew up?
A palaeontologist. I read my first scientific study of dinosaurs when I was six, and I still love them very much. :)
2. Describe a dream you remember. The first one that comes to mind.
I usually try not to remember my dreams, because most of the ones I do remember aren't really dreams at all, but a recollection of something terrible that once happened in my life, that I try to forget but resurfaces in my dreams. I don't like dreaming.
3. What book are you reading?
The Onion Girl by Charles de Lint
4. What colour are your sheets? Curtains?

Were the sandals a comfort or a lifestyle decision?
11. The guilty pleasure you'd really rather not admit to here:
Uhmmm...I can't think of anything.

13. What's the last video you rented?
I don't rent videos, I buy dvds. I think the last one was The Simpsons series 2.

When I was little people always said I looked like Punky Brewster, but now sometimes I get told I look a bit like Edina from Absolutely Fabulous.

I know there was something witty I had thought of earlier to end this entry with, but as I can't remember it right now I'll just say goodnight. Goodnight! :)

Date: 2002-10-22 10:11 pm (UTC)Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 12:13 am (UTC)Reading your account of the symposium made me smile. I have to admit that I would have probably been so there if knew it was taking place. One of my acquantaines Farah Mendlesohn (was she a panelist?) has already contributed to a collection of academic essays on Buffy called Fighting the Forces: What's at Stake in Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
Fact of the matter is if one is a fan of such things in one's twenties then it is jolly easy to remain a fan into one's twilight years (post 30). OK, maybe this isn't scarey until you realise what this could mean in 30 years when the obsessed FotR/Legolas/Orlando Bloom fans now in their teens hit their 40s.
*hugs*

Date: 2002-10-22 01:12 am (UTC)Re: Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 02:01 am (UTC)I was dead chuffed because this sort of subject area of charting the way in which myth resurfaces in popular culture is an on-going interest of mine and had 'spotted' Buffy's potential pretty much from first season. So was 'early adopter'.
Do you recall title of other book?
Re: Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 02:16 am (UTC)I find the whole academic study of pop culture a fascinating subject in itself, but I suspect it'd be a bit meta as an essay topic. Maybe one day.
Re: Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 09:49 am (UTC)Re: Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 04:42 am (UTC)Actually, the editor of Fighting the Forces was there (Rhonda? Rhiannon? Something like that), and she was my favourite panelist. I liked what she had to say alot, and was both lack back and insightful.
I think all but one of the other panelists were contributers to that book, but I don't remember anyone named Farah. I could be wrong of course. *G*
The image of screaming Orli fangirls at 45 is going to give me nightmares. *lol*
Re: Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 05:50 am (UTC)I'll lay money on there being women of that age + already with his pictures on their walls. At least Viggo is in his mid 40s so more legitimate target as thinking woman's crumpet!
Re: Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 06:13 am (UTC)I think my dad might object to Viggo posters on the wall, though.

Date: 2002-10-22 06:44 am (UTC)Billy seems to be the one older women gravitate towards in my experience...about half of my friends from the Pippin's Playgroup area messageboard at the Council of Elrond (formerly Imladris.net) are over 40. But then, EVERYone loves ickle Billykins. *giggles*
And my mum does like to swoon - she has pictures of Colin Firth on her wall. Scary. *laughs*
Re: Confession: that could have been me!
Date: 2002-10-22 06:11 am (UTC)I think my favourite panelist was the somewhat bewildered blue-haired grad student who didn't really know what she was doing up on there but wasn't going to sacrifice a comfy seat for anyone.

Date: 2002-10-22 06:39 am (UTC)Oh yes, I forgot about her! She was cool. And definately seemed a bit lost and bewildered. *grins*

Date: 2002-10-22 02:04 pm (UTC)I'd quite like to write intriguing essays on the underlying mythological significance of pop culture. Wheee! My parents think I need a degree in psychology; I'm rather tempted. Get an MA in writing, a PhD in English, another PhD in psychology, by that point I'm forty and ready to start teaching...whee!
My bet is that in your last life you lived in Narnia, and were an otter, and were also the official Storyteller at Cair Paravel. So there. *gryn*

[recalls earlier conversation she read in your journal] I do, however, occasionally allow myself to drool a bit after Viggo. on the rare occasions I can get over my...erm..."other fixation." *grin*
