Feb. 16th, 2003 11:15 pmI'm ill.
Which I suppose is as good excuse as any for not going to the anti-war demonstration in London yesterday. I had mixed feelings about going anyway, but even before I got sick (on friday) I realized that I would probably hyperventilate if I were in a crowd of a million people, I just do not feel comfortable in large groups, and that would have been far too large to handle. But it would have been nice to meet up with
evil_nick and say hi. Ah well, another time. :)
Lets see, what are some interesting things that have happened lately...
--- This morning I watched a programme about otters! God, they're adorable. I love their little noses and the way they slide down on their tummies into the water, and their cute lil' squeaks and especially their playful nature. They're just soooo cute. Yayyy otters!
---
andraste_oz's journal this week is full of stories about her trip to New Zealand, and it's making me very nostalgic. My 3 weeks in NZ was the best vacation I ever had, and not just because it was the last holiday I had with both my parents (it was just before their divorce). We went to both islands, and visited just about everywhere, including most of the locations used for the filming of Lord of the Rings, and had the most amazing time. I walked on a glacier, worked on a sheep station (I sheared a sheep!), nearly bungee jumped (alas, too young), went on a trip through a Fjord, and saw the most breathtaking scenery in the world. New Zealand really is as beautiful as LOTR makes it out to be, and it's no surprise that all the boys want to move there. *I* want to move there. Maybe one day I shall. :)
--- I had a pleasant surprise this weekend when I discovered that one of my favourite shows when I was younger is still on tv, a brilliant Australian kids show called Ocean Girl. Does anyone else remember this series? It used to be on Disney and I was totally addicted. It's about a girl who's best friend is a whale named Charlie, and the two boys she meets one day who become her friends and protectors. It sounds utterly cheesy, but it's such fun! I wanted to know Neri so badly, and swim with her and Charlie off the beautiful island that was their home. Yeah, I'm sad. But you knew that already. *grins*
--- I'm so pleased that everyone enjoyed my silly little quiz. I have a few ideas for more, if you're interested. *G* At least, I thought everyone liked it -- the only people who graded it all gave it a 1/5. Which didn't exactly make me feel very good, as you can imagine. *I* thought it was a rather enjoyable bit of fluff. Any suggestions about what I can improve next time? (Don't worry, pictures will be smaller, and it won't be a friends related quiz. Probably. ;-)
---This is a vast collection of LOTR filks (song parodies), some of which are absolutely hysterical. Go read!
Oooh, and speaking of parodies,
ixwin has updated her page of LOTR/Buffy songs! Click meeeee.
--- I think I need a new moodtheme, but I don't know how to make one. There's nothing really wrong with this one (mmm LOTR boys), but I'm afraid there's just too much Elijiah Wood. Sorry
trianne, he's cute and all, but he's no Billeh. *grins* If some generous soul would like to talk me through the process, I'd be ever so grateful.
--- Someone please recommend a book and music CD to me. I am desperate for something new and exciting. The last book I read, The Red Tent was amazing, a wonderful historical fiction written in a simple, elegant prose. Very meaningful and interesting. But now I have read every single book in my substantial collection (most of which I have already read at least 3 or 4 times) and I'm getting restless. More books! One can never have enough books, as this charming Edward Gorey shirt says. Anyone want to buy it for me? *grins*
And now here is a present for all my friends, because you're all special, and I don't think I have thanked you for being so kind and wonderful to me. Thank you. :)

Did you know that Neri's an alien? And she has a sister? I got as far as the end of that series, when her sister went back home but she stayed on earth, but I'm pretty sure the episode I saw today was the next series, as I don't remember it and the boys looked alot older. I'll have to look around online for some fansites to catch up with the story, but who cares! I get to watch my show again! (God, I am so sad. I really shouldn't get this excited about a kids program. *laughs*)

I'll have to check it out and see if its on Discovery Kids here. Probably not, but it might be on the WGBH (<3 the British television station) or another one that has shows from the UK and Aussieland. Hopefully one of the three will have it, lol.

Date: 2003-02-16 03:39 pm (UTC)Hmmm, a book and a CD... a really interesting and intriguing book is Death at the Priory: Love, Sex, and Murder in Victorian England by James Ruddick. That's what I'm reading right now, and it's quite fun. I'm not usually into non-fiction, but I'm enjoying this one.
As for a CD, anything by Tom McRae. I just found out he has a new CD out, and I downloaded it all and am loving it. His old album is really great too.
But that's just my personal opinion. ;)

That book sounds fantastic, I'll try and get it at the bookshop this week. The Victorians are so fascinating, aren't they?
I've never heard of Tom McRae, but I'll look him up, thanks! *squeeeeeeeeeze* :D

Aha...
Date: 2003-02-16 04:18 pm (UTC)I can remember many a lazy afternoon playing in the pool with my sister where we'd Neri-swim our day away. Then we'd decide to play "The Little Mermaid" instead and fight over who got to be Ariel until I'd say something like "Alright, you can be Ariel - I want to be "Pearl", Ariel's far more exciting and much more attractive cousin" which would start arguement number two - who got to be Pearl, which funnily enough Lucy would win while I was left to be Ariel... aha ha ha.

Date: 2003-02-16 04:21 pm (UTC)TONEYYY! *flyingtacklepouncesquish* :D
Actually, I Neri-swam even before I saw the show. *grins sheepishly*

Date: 2003-02-16 11:09 pm (UTC)Otters are the mammalian equivalent of penguin. They're cute and fuzzy and I don't know a soul who actively dislikes them.

Making your own mood icons is a huge pain in the ass, which is why I never finished mine. You ave to make them all and then upload them to your web space, then enter them all into the LJ administration console. There's a pretty godd walk through at their icon help page over here.
At the risk of being lynched, I'd say that too much Elijah Wood is a good summary of events as they stand. I mean, he's got pretty eyes and all, but as for the rest...meh. The world needs more Billeh. Billeh Billeh Billeh! And more... well, more of all the rest of them. It ought to be awfully damn obvious by now which one I'm partial to, so I'm going to give it a rest and just say that I don't think there was a man that got in front of the camera on that project who wasn't a sexy beast.

I'm on a huge Guy G. Kay kick right now, but I think that I've pimped him to you before. There's a book I've been trying to get hold of, "An Instance of the Fingerpost," by Iain Pears. It's a murder mystery set in Oxford in the late 1600s. Another one I finished a while ago and liked was "The Shadow of the Lion," an odd sort of historical fantasy set in the Venetian Republic in the 1500s. By Mercedes Lackey and some other guys. If you can forgive a tendancy toward Mary Sueism in the protagonists, it's not a bad story. I've also been reading all sorts of esoteric nonfiction. Everything from the evolution of the use of language to the history of women's roles in movies. A couple of terrific books by writers writing about writing, as well, but that stuff tends to be kind of boring unless you're into literary theory.

An Instance of the Fingerpost is a fantastic book, I hope you find it soon! And thanks so much for reminding me about Guy Kay, I knew there was an author I was supposed to explore, and couldn't remember who it was. Cheers!

Was Ocean Girl popular? Or mocked for being silly? (Although how anything could be considered sillier than things like Atlantis High is beyond me. ;-)

I'm too nervous to read The Hot Zone, but The demon in the freezer sounds intriguing...
Ahhhh, Midnight, yes. Crap film, supposedly brilliant book. Will look it up. *G*
I'm not a big Mahler fan, but I do love Tchaikosky. I worship Beethoven, his music is so utterly, utterly beautiful. And don't apologize for not knowing 'popular' music, because I haven't a clue about it either. I never listen to the radio (unless it's BBC4 comedy or Classic FM) and the only modern music I ever hear is usually on those 'Best Hits of 2002!' cd collection adverts on tv. So I am very sad indeed. *giggles*

Hi!

yep, I did draw this icon. But Jaida colored it. I actually drew about sixteen of these "people faces" on one flash card, and you may see them pop up randomly here and there. I think Jaida's is floating around somewhere in her bio...
I think I like it here. Perhaps I'll stay for tea. ;)
