We got Potter! We got Potter!
Jun. 24th, 2003 10:01 am21 June -- Saturday morning, 12.01am: Nevvie stands at the front of the queue and receives her beautiful new copy of Order of the Phoenix.
12.02am: Nevvie is in the throws of ecstasy, squealing and petting her book, purring 'My precioussssss...'
12.04am: Nevvie drives home as swiftly as she can to begin reading.
Sometime around 6.30am: Nevvie falls asleep, having been reading nonstop for 6 hours.
Noon-ish: Nevvie wakes up, eats lunch, bounces around excitedly telling the wall and her tv how much she is enjoying the book.
5pm: Nevvie closes book and beams happily. The End.
Guhhhhh. That's my initial reaction. Just. Wow. I laughed, I cried (no less than *6* times -- yes, I am that pathetic and I don't care!), I remembered exactly why I fell in love with these incredible books. Not that I could ever really forget of course. I do listen to the audiobooks nearly every day after all. *grins*
OmgIlovethisamazingunbelievablyfantasticutterlywonderfulandexcitingBOOK!
What a thrilling ride that was. I'm already reading it again because I just don't want the experience to end. Thank GOD J.K didn't disappoint with this one, I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't fallen madly in love with this book too.
First impressions: Harry really does have a bitch of a life, doesn't he? *laughs* I know people are annoyed because he's being whingy, but he has every right to be as stroppy as he wants -- if YOU had his horrible life, you'd be complaining nonstop and wanting to blow things up too.
I'm so pleased Neville finally gets a chance to shine, and prove that he is capable and brave, especially as I was getting rather bored of him melting cauldrons and being a nuisance all the time. And thinking about Neville being the Boy Who Lived...what a fantastic twist that was! I never saw that coming. I just love how J.K can still surprise us, even after all this time.
Sirius using Harry as a James-substitute. Wow, that was heartbreaking. I should have thought of it before (it seems so obvious now) that Sirius would pretend that his godson was his best friend. After all, when he went to Azkaban they were both still young and not long out of Hogwarts, it's so natural for him to see Harry and think 'James'.
Angst Angst Angst -- No, not Harry's, MINE -- Where the hell are all the bloody Ravenclaws! I am sick to death of those bloody boring, gossiping Hufflepuffs. Where are the people from MY House? Let's see, let's make a list. So far we have Cho, who admitedly got a personality in this book, just not a very interesting one, Penelope Clearwater (whom we know nothing about except she was dating Percy -- I assume they've broken up now), Padma 'I like Pretty French Boys' Patil, some random boys we know the names of but nothing else (Michael, Terry, etc), and Loony Lovegood. Oh, hurrah. While I admit Luna is interesting in a Delirium sort of way, she does not make up for the glaring under-representation of the BEST HOUSE IN HOGWARTS. Grrr. I want more Ravenclaws dammit! Or at least better Ravenclaws. Yeah, that's what I mean. I want some Eagles who don't SUCK. Arrrrrgghhhhhhhhhh. *bashes things*
Ahem. As you can see, I am a trifle upset that I have no Ravenclaws to love. Sniff. We're still the best though. ;-)
Is anyone else annoyed that throughout the books Harry always has something important to tell Dumbledore, and either doesn't because he's too proud, or when he wants to is usually shunted away? If all the teachers (well, McGonnagal and Snape anyway) know how important Harry is, and his connection to the Dark Lord, why are they always telling him not to bother Dumbledore? It makes no sense. Of course, a lot of things don't make sense right now. I guess that's why we still have lots of things to discuss until Book 7. *G*
Professor Umbitch. Now there's a piece of work. Makes you wonder what kind of daemons are inside JK to allow her to create someone so pernicious and vile to the core. Everything she did shocked and angered me, and of course I loved to hate her, more than anyone else in the series so far. I think it'll be quite hard to find another villian to top her.
Where was Victor Krum? I was really looking forward to more of a Ron-Hermione-Victor triangle thingy, or at least an appearance to show that he supports Dumbledore's efforts to get rid of Voldemort. And speaking of Ron/Hermione, when the hell are they going to snog? When are they going to realize the reason they do nothing but fight is because they are so in luuuuuurve? Anyone who doubts their relationship is anything but speculation, I say HA! J.K has stated on numourous occasions that it is Meant To Be. Take that, unbelievers! I just wish they'd hurry up and date already. Or at least realize that they like each other. Sheeesh.
Eeep, there are still so many things I want to say, but my arm is really beginning to hurt from all this typing. *whimper* I'm sure it's all been said by other people anyway. I just wanted to squee. So I shall. :)
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! *does the Happy Nevvie dance* :D
1. Describe in five words or less how you feel about Order of the Phoenix.
Absolutely Bloody Brilliant. Wheeeeeee!
2. What are your feelings on Harry's personality? Do you think he is overly cynical, depressed, etc. . . .?
I didn't mind at all -- he's a teenage boy! Cut him some slack! All teenagers are angsty, and Harry quite literally has the fate of the world on his shoulders -- I'd be mad as hell too! I think he was quite justified in being extremely pissed off, and quite frankly I wish he had laid into Dumbledore for abandoning him, because *I* was certainly feeling upset, even though I knew it was for a good reason. So no, I didn't have any problems with him being moody throughout the book.
3. Do you think Order of the Phoenix is appropriate for children 13 and younger? Why or why not?
It depends on the maturity level of the child. I wouldn't have had any problem with it, but then I was reading very adult books before I was 10, so I think I'm different than most. I do think if a child wants to read it, then they should -- anything that encourages children to read is a very good thing.
4. List your five most hated characters (either in Book 5 or the whole series, non-humans can be included).
In no particular order.
1)Winky the bloody buggering House Elf.
2)Ernie Macmillian. Shut up you shallow, pompous prat!
3)Professor Umbridge. I fear her more than Voldemort. *shudder*
4)Rita Skeeter. Die bitch die!
5)Draco Malfoy. Why the hell isn't he booted out of school? His dad is a Numero Uno Death Eater for godsakes! He's not scary anymore, just incredibly irksome. *kicks him*
5. Percy turned away from his family. Will he come crawling back to them now or . . .?
Quote from
ashfae:'He'll come crawling back eventually, yep. Or die tragically. Or both.'
I concur.
6. What did you think of the new DADA's punishment? Why didn't Harry nor Lee complain?
Bloody terrifying! Ye gods, that woman is evil. Such a deliciously horrid punishment, in so many ways. I don't know why Lee didn't complain, but I'm sure Harry didn't more out of pride than anything else. He never tells people things that would quite blatantly help him (and probably save the world). Stupid git. ;-)
7. What do you think of James and Lily now?
I want to know MORE! I crave backstory. More please!
8. Has your opinion (which is probably not too good) of Petunia Dursley changed? If yes, how so?
Yes and no. I'm pleased she is aquiring more depth, but I'm even MORE pissed off at the way she's treated Harry, knowing his destiny and all that. Grr.
9. What's the meaning of Snape's nickname in your opinion?
Don't be daft, it's perfectly obvious! What a stupid question.
10. What do you think of the character death? Do you think s/he will return?
I have no doubt that he will return, in Granny Weatherwax style wearing a big sign that says 'I ATEN'T DEAD'. So there.
11. Do you think fanfiction will be hurt by Book 5? Do you see any new pairings arising? Do you see any huge ships falling apart?
I don't read fanfiction. I'm sick to death of people thinking the only way you can be in a 'fandom' is to write or obsess about fanfiction. So I don't really care.
12. What was your favourite chapter in Order of the Phoenix? Why?
*ponders* How exceedingly difficult. I think perhaps the second chapter, because it was such a roller coaster ride, although I'm sure if I think about it a bit more I'll come up with something different. (Edit: Occlumancy ruled. Snape backstory is so deliciously tantalizing. I want MORE!)
13. Talk about Fred and George's "flight."
Fabulous! Wish they could have taken me with them. ;-)
14. Give some thoughts on Ron.
Yayy Ron! He's never been my favourite Weasley (All hail Gred and Forge!) but I do love the poor blighter. I'm glad he was made a prefect, although slightly disappointed we never got to really see him deal with the responsibility and privilege he so craved, yet felt he did not deserve. Ron's a great best friend, even if he does act like a clueless git sometimes. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
15. What did you think of Dumbledore's explanation?
Colour me stunned. *snort*
But still, Harry did need to know, even if the reader found it quite redundant.
16. Do you feel satisfied by this book?
Was it an intensely satisfying and thrilling read? Yes.
Do I want more? YES!!
17. How anxious are you now for Book 6?
Are you serious? GIMME GIMME GIMME! We wants it precioussssssss...*licks lips hungrily*
Bloody hell my arm hurts. *laughs* I've been typing for nearly two hours! I better get a LOT of comments from this entry. ;-)
Happy Happy Birthday to
eyre_lasgalen! Love you lots my fabulous friend. *hugs and kisses* Your present was sent by Owl Post this morning. *grins*
And now, if you don't mind, I think I shall go away and collapse with a good Book. :)
PS -- Tonks! :D

Date: 2003-06-25 11:33 am (UTC)I liked Luna, and I look forward to getting to know her better (I've had it suggested to me that she'll date Harry -- well, we'll see ;-), I just wish we had better Ravenclaw role models. Why are all the 'cool' kids in Gryffindor? WE'RE the coolest! Go Eagles! :D
