The Really, Really Long Comic-Con Report
Jul. 23rd, 2003 06:45 pmThese are the people I saw
Neil Gaiman
Dave McKean
Elijah Wood
Dominic Monagahn
Andy Serkis
Sean Astin
Richard Taylor (Mr WETA himself)
Halle Berry
Mark Hamill
Jill Thompson (Sandman artist)
Billy West (Voice of Stimpy and half the cast of Futurama)
Rob Paulson (Voice of Pinky, Yakko, and my new biiiiiig crush)
Maurice LaMarche (Voice of the Brain and the other half of Futurama)
Lisa Henson (Daughter of Jim & President of Henson Pictures)
Brian Froud (coolest artist in the world)
Charles Vess (Sandman artist)
Genndy Taratovsky (Creator of Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab & Samurai Jack)
These are the people I actually met & have autographs
Rob Paulson (I told him he inspires me, but not that I have a MAJOR crush on him *giggles*)
Richard Taylor (I did tell him I thought he was really cute ;-)
Genndy Taratovsky (He drew a little Dexter for me!)
Brian Froud (He drew a little sprite for me and is so adorable)
Charles Vess (He signed all my various things without complaining)
Lisa Henson (Just had to scribble as she was being rushed away)
Jill Thompson (Sadly, did not draw a chibi-Delirium for me. Pout.)
These are the people I did not get to see. Whinge.
Matt Groening (Creator of The Simpsons)
The cast and writers of Stargate: SG-1
Hugh Jackman
Angelina Jolie
Kate Beckinsale
Ray Bradbury
Stan Lee (Creator of The X-Men and just about everything else in the Marvel universe)
...And I did not get to say 'Hi' to Neil. Am very, very sad about this. *sniff*
Things I learned at Comic-Con
Andy Serkis likes wearing really, REALLY tight trousers. Mrrrowwwrrr. ;-)
The new Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series (directed by The Amazing Genndy) is a zillion times better than the first two Prequels put together. My faith in the awesomeness of the Star Wars universe has been restored.
Dave McKean is obsessed with fish.
Watching Maurice LaMarche and Rob Paulson perform as Pinky and the Brain is just about the coolest thing that has ever been seen. Rob actually bounces in the chair and leaps around when he says 'Poit!' Soooooooooo cute.
Dave McKean's film Mirrormask is going to be astoundingly brilliant. The world needs a new Labyrinth, and this is definitely going to be it.
Neil is so cute when he burbles. But I already knew that. I just like reminding people. ;-)
ROTK...ROTK....ROTK!!!! Sweet Eru, it's going to be amazing. AMAZING. Guhhh. *crashthud*
What else can I tell you about Comic-Con? I saw Neil's A Short Film about John Bolton, which was a surprise mockumentary, except I knew it wasn't quite what it seemed right away, as Jonathan Ross 'just happened' to appear wearing his favourite purple suit. *grins* And I saw the new Scary Godmother Halloween special, which was utterly delightful, and the Mirrormask preview, which I can't believe is being made with a budget of only 4 million. It's going to blow everyone away -- trust me guys, you're going to love it. :)
The WETA workshop guys showed off some glorious examples of Elven and Rohirrim armour, and Dom inspected a lovely hobbit lass, but was very disapproving of her shoddily applied foothair. Jill Thompson's new Death manga looks fantastic, and the new Sandman Endless Nights can't come out soon enough. (17 September!)
Neil and Dave are a true OTP, they have such an easy, comfortable relationship, you can just tell they like each other very much and are glad to still be working together after all these years.
maybethemoon, whom I met up with on saturday, is a delightful girl, and we had lots of fun being squeeing fangirls together. Wheeeeee. :)
That's about it really. I had an amazing time, and still can't believe all the wonderful things I got to see. (Or all the wonderful things I missed! There was just too much stuff going on at the same time. Bastards.) I got a shedload of freestuff, including posters, t-shirts, and more buttons than one person should legally be allowed. Anyone want some goodies? *G*
I'm a bit sad that I didn't meet up with anyone else from LJ, especially as I know there were so many people I either know through mutual friends or have heard of because they're infamous (and therefore worth getting to know ;-), and I was just wandering around by myself most of the time. But that's okay. At least I got to go! I had to drive 5-6 hours every damn day, but it was SO WORTH IT! :D
Yayyy Comic-Con! Anyone want to go with me next year? *grins impishly*

Date: 2003-07-23 06:54 pm (UTC)Am so glad you had a good time - would have loved to go, but this whole 'big sea in between us' issue puts a dampener on most things cool...lol
Methinks I shall have to make an effort to disturb many film premieres in London to make myself feel better...:P

But if I had, I would have passed him on to you. ;-)

Date: 2003-07-24 03:03 pm (UTC)You would have loved the reading of the Pinky and the Brain script. I was falling out of my chair with laughter, and full of immense LUUUUUUUURRRRVE for Rob Paulson. Mmmmm. He is SO CUTE. Guhhh. :))

...guh. The image that puts in my head! If Andy hadn't been replaced in my heart by the beauty that is TEH RICKMAN!, I would be exceedingly jealous.
..oh. Wait. I am anyway. Never mind.

Date: 2003-07-24 03:04 pm (UTC)You were talking about me? Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh! *flutters eyelashes prettily*
Andy's trousers were scandalously tight. So tight. So buldgey. YUM. *giggles*

I got my picture taken with him (he's such a cute, scruffy lil' teddy bear) which I will try and post online as soon as possible. Whooot!

Date: 2003-07-23 09:01 pm (UTC)I also envy that you got to see Dave McKean! I've noticed the fish obsession (ever read the commentary in the Sandman "Dustcovers" book? *s*). I haven't kept up with Mr. McKean lately, though, ever since the dreamline.nu website stopped updating. Is Mirrormask going to be a wide-release thing, or will it be something I never get to see like his previous films? :)
no subject
Date: 2003-07-24 03:08 pm (UTC)I'm that geek too! I love being able to say 'Hey, that's Rob Paulson/Jim Cummings/Tress McNeil/E.G Daily/etc' and squee at the tv like a total freak. GO US! :D
I did read the Dustcovers, but that doesn't even begin to describe how mind-blowingly obsessed Dave is with fish. Seriously. In the talk with just Dave and Neil every other word was 'fish'. *laughs*
Mirrormask is going to be a BIG film for Henson pictures, it's going to be released everywhere next year, and it's going to be a very big deal. Yes, you will see it. And you will LOVE it. :)

Why was I not born American? Why?????
Glad you had a good time, sorry you didn't meet other LJers, sorry about the drive of hell. If I had been with you, twould have been fuuuuun babeee. love you

Date: 2003-07-24 02:29 am (UTC)Keep reading my journal for updates, and you'll learn just how many times we crossed paths. I wonder if you're in any of my photos! There was a livejournal meet-up on the mezzanine on Satyrday night, but I missed it because I was in line to meet the Van Helsing cast. I really wanted to go! I'm definitely planning to attend next year and would love to say hi then.
Re: One Comic-Con to rule them all.
Date: 2003-07-24 03:10 pm (UTC)There was a Meetup!? DOH!
Where was it announced? *sad*
Ah well. I had a brilliant time anyway. And I'm sure we were at the same places, just my luck to have missed you. Hey ho, there's always next year, neh? ;-)

Date: 2003-07-24 03:46 am (UTC)Neil is adorable and wonderful (his burbling is good, LOL - though OTP?! bwahahahah!!!), Andy Serkis rocks (met him once after he did a play in my town - he was Iago in Othello and rocked and was so nice even though he'd just been on stage for like 4 hours) and you saw Dom Monaghan which is *so* unfair and ROTK is going to be *amazing* and guuuuuh. Also, I'm gutted for you on the people you didn't get to see. I'd've loved to meet Matt Groening and the Stargate: SG1 people. (Jack and Daniel and Sam are *all* hot, dammit!)
Uh, yeah. Underneath all those run-on sentences somewhere, I'm glad you had a good time. :D

Date: 2003-07-24 03:12 pm (UTC)Don't hate me! I'm too cute! :D
The Stargate and Simpsons events were all at the same time as LOTR, so I couldn't go. RAWR!
Eeeeeeee you saw Andy in Othello? Coool. See, now I'm envious of YOU. *grins*

Date: 2003-07-24 06:46 am (UTC)Charles Vess really is one of the Nicest Men on Earth (tm), though. I had the good fortune of meeting him at a very tiny con in S. Florida a few years ago, and he spent about half an hour looking through my journal - that was after he drew a lovely picture of Morpheus in it. :)
That, by the way, was the same con that I met Neil at, and Neil spent some time with my journal, and doodled in it while sitting on a panel!
Ah, that day... what a sweet day that was... :)

I can't believe you got to see all these amazing people!!! I'm just speechless.
1. Pinky and the Brain rule. Can't imagine how trippy it must be to see LaMarche and Paulson do it in REAL LIFE!!
2. Your faith in Star Wars is restored? *Awed* Then I too must see this amazing animation to restore my own faith in the force
3. Andy Serkis in tight trousers. Growl
4. RotK - I just don't want to know about it......*cries*
5. Billy West!!!!!!!!!! Whooppeeeee!!!! He is my fave voice actor just about EVER!!
"Aly attends Comic-con 2004 with Nevvie"

Rob is SO outstandingly adorable. He hugged me and smiled at me lots and was so cute I wanted to melt. *swooooooooooon*
Billy West took off his shirt and showed off his nipples. Woohooo! Plus he's really, really short. I think he's only an inch taller than me, the poor man. *giggles*
