ComicCon 2004!
Jul. 27th, 2004 03:40 pmHello darlings! Yes, I know it has been a very long time since my last update, and I promise to write a comprehensive one soon, but right now it's time to dish the delicious dirt on this year's ComicCon, woohooo!
Although this year wasn't nearly as exciting as the last (how could it be? Last year was the All Neil Revue, nothing could possibly compete with that ;-) it was still alot of fun. I met The Last Unicorn author Peter S. Beagle and talked to him for *10 minutes*, and made him blush from my constant praise. *grins* I bumped into
disgruntledjenn and her friends, spent time with the adorable
mailea and
undershirtseekr, saw Ray Bradbury, Billy West, Brad Bird, Amber Benson, Jude Law, Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly, the creators of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021...and of course, David Wenham, BILLY BOYD, and my beloved Neil Gaiman. Neeeiiiiilll. :)
Starting off on a very silly note, I present: The Elvis impersonating Stormtrooper!

Is this is one of the strangest things you've ever seen? I think so too. ;-)

Actual film costumes from the New Line booth. I would give anything for Pippin's outfit. Or just Pippin, really.

Am I crazy, or does Sam seem particuarly freaked out by having my enormous arse in his face? *laughs*

TheOneRing.net's Quickbeam and Peter S. Beagle at the Ringers panel. The documentary about LOTR fans looks like it's going to be a real treat, both funny and informative, and hopefully won't make us look like a bunch of pathetic Trekkies. *smirks* (Ha ha, just kidding. I love being a Trekker!)

Can you tell this is Eliza Dushku? She's laughing here, and although I can't remember why I do know everyone else was in a fit of giggles too.

The biggest surprise of the convention was the world premiere of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy teaser trailer (absolutely brilliant!) and poster. I was so nervous about the film, but it looks as though it is actually being done right. Yayyyyyyyyyyy. :)

I know this is a terrible picture of Neil and Dave, but it does show how close I was to the stage. Not close enough to say 'hi' to them though. *sniff*

Isn't Neil just so adorable when he's talking? Or smiling. Or laughing. Or breathing. ;-)

I ran up to the stage as Neil was leaving, and I nearly got him to notice me, but alas, he was ushered away just as I was about to speak. Ah well. It's not like I'm ever going to stopstalking him going to these events. :)

The big screen at the New Line panel. Doesn't it give you chills?

The boys from Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle try to get us to see their film. While normally I avoid any films that condone drug use like the plague, the guy who plays Kumar is really cute, so I have conflicting feelings about this one. *G*

BILLEH! I wish I could remember half (or any) of the hilarious things he said, because he really was so adorably silly and clever, I couldn't stop squeeing. I think I probably annoyed the skinny girl sitting on my right with my constant, high pitched vocal luuuuuurve. *grins*
My favourite moments were the surprise announcement of the HHGG trailer, the fantastic clips from Pixar's The Incredibles, Billy telling the story of the 'fake' script and possible naked hobbits (Mmmmmmmmm), meeting SwimBuddha and a bunch of the AdultSwim staff (and especially discovering Dana Snyder, voice of Master Shake, is exceptionally geekycute), telling Peter Beagle that Schmendrick was my first crush and watching him smile with pleasure, and of course, the entire Mirrormask panel with Dave and Neil. I can't even begin to describe the awe inspiring, jaw droppingly gorgeous visual feast that is Mirrormask. It's like walking into one of Dave's gloriously surreal paintings -- strange, twisted, unique, slightly disturbing, inconceivably beautiful. Someone in the audience called it 'visual poetry', and it really is. Believe me when I say this film will change your life. I still can't stop thinking about it, and even in my dreams the creatures from Dave and Neil's imagination haunts me. Which is, of course, a Very Good Thing. :)
I bought a Family Guy storyboard panel of Stewie holding a ray gun from the Cartoon Network booth, a map of Middle Earth umbrella that I really don't need here in LA, but was so beautiful I just had to have it, a few LOTR trinkets from Japan, and two Convention only Mirrormask t-shirts, one for wearing and one to hang on my wall. (I should have bought more to sell on Ebay. Doh. *G*)
...And thus concludes my ComicCon report. Wheeeeee. :)

Date: 2004-07-27 10:47 pm (UTC)I think the photo of you scaring Sam is probably the greatest thing I've seen all day. You win! Refusing to stop worrying about the HHG film until I see it, though. Am concentrating on building my hopes for the slightly less scary-sounding radio series so far. (With Simon Jones in it! Squee!)

Date: 2004-07-27 10:59 pm (UTC)Am v.pleased someone likes the scary photo -- Frodo seems to disturbed he got out his sword to drive me away...;-)
Of course I am still exceedingly nervous about the HHGG film, but I do think Martin Freeman is an excellent choice for Arthur (not to mention a hot one), even if I still cringe at the thought of our new Ford. But the trailer (have you seen it? I think it's up at aintitcool.com) appears to heading in the right direction, and the new poster is fabulous. Although let's not forget it is a Disney production (bleaugh), as I was reminded on my Con promo mini-towels that we were given after the panel ended. Could be bad, could be good. We shall see...:)

Date: 2004-07-27 11:04 pm (UTC)Sounds like you had a great time, you look socute and squee in that picture, though for a second I thought you were waving Sting around :D
HHGTTG is sacred, so they better be making a good job of it. Or else! You wern't one of the lucky beggers to walk off with the trailer on a DVD were you?

Date: 2004-07-27 11:10 pm (UTC)Johnna got both the Lost and New Line Panels on video, so if you ever want them, they'll be up online later this week, I think. The Lost panel is awesome, because were were dead center, front row RIGHT in front of Dom. And he waved at the camera because he saw Johnna filming the entire time right on him LOL

Date: 2004-07-27 11:29 pm (UTC)I love the pictures. I didn't take any cause I forgot my camera. Plus all I got to see was the exhibition hall and about one half of a panel.

Date: 2004-08-04 12:34 am (UTC)You actually got to pet it!? EEEEEEEEEK. Did you save the cloth fibers from your hand? *giggles* ;-)
Have you seen the HHGG trailer yet? (Sorry it's taken so long to reply to your comment, and I haven't read your journal yet, so I don't know) It was just a basic teaser with 'What a Wonderful World' playing as the camera does a close up on the earth, and then when the song reaches the climax, the earth explodes. Of course. *grins* It was just such a brilliant moment, everyone in the audience was whooping and cheering and falling out of their chairs with glee. Or at least, I was. *beams proudly*

Date: 2004-07-28 08:13 pm (UTC)Aigh! I missed you! I send you something like six emails and they all bounced back! AUGH! DON'T GIVE ME THIS COMIC CON STUFF, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!?!?!
...I lied, do give me the comic con stuff too, except that I have to kill you for your ten minutes of conversation with Peter S. Beagle. And for having viewed the Hitchhiker trailer. And--well, I just have to kill you. *HUGE HUGS*

Date: 2004-07-29 06:59 pm (UTC)Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaashhhhfaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaae!
You sent me emails? To which address? I can't imagine why any would bounce back, how puzzling... You can always use the LJ email or just neverwhere @ writeme.com, those are the best ones to reach me.
I thought of you the whole time Peter and I were talking, and wishing you were there to share the experience with me. Plus I know you'd have more intelligent things to say to him about his work, instead of just squeeing about how Schmendrick was my first crush. *G*
He mentioned a Diana Wynne Jones book that I have completely forgotten the name of now, Fantasyland or summat, that's a great satire of the fantasy genre and recommended I read it right away. Any ideas which one he was talking about?
Where have a I been...well, at work mostly. I am seriously hating my life at the mo, because it's nothing but workworkwork at ridiculous hours for no money. Bleaugh.
Yours, however, seems to be progressing nicely...with a few notable exceptions of course. *cuddlelove*
I have things to send you, and I really do promise to send them soon. Honestly. :)
*squiiiiiiiiiiiiiish*

Date: 2004-07-29 09:40 pm (UTC)And yes I sent you emails! Mostly "where are you? we miss you! come back!" type things, so I didn't save any, baaah, but I seem to have sent them to a very old out of date email (ntworld or somesuch), so I will make sure that now I have the proper ones, bwhaha, and you will not be able escape communicating with me! BWHAHAHA!
My life is not progressing very nicely at all except for the one rather prominent notable exception mentioned in the last paragraph. (Diane Wynne Jones, of course *gryn*) But I'm plugging along, or somesuch. Bleaaaah, working loooong hours for no money is a bad thing. We must rescue you! *sends for Schmendrick, on the grounds that a great wizard/second-rate pickpocket can surely do an adequate rescuing job*
*hugs and hugs and hugs and hugs*
I'm much more glad to hear from you than I could possibly be about whatever it is you have to send me. *kissonnanose*

Date: 2004-08-04 12:21 am (UTC)Aiya, the ntlworld is a Nick address, I no longer have access to it. Or him. But let's not go there...*stifles a sigh*
I quite fancy a rescue. And a jaunt to Scotland certainly would be an excellent restorative. YES PLEASE. *stamps forehead with PAR AVION and waits for Royal Mail to arrive* :-P
Please give Chris a kiss from me as a thank you for the book titles, I shall request them from the library forthwith. And a kiss from you too. Not that you need encouragement in that area, I'm sure. *smirks*
I really must write you that letter I've been promising for months. Gah. *kicks self hard* I reallyreallyreally will. *smooooooooooooch*

Date: 2004-08-04 05:48 pm (UTC)Scotland, Scotland, Scotland! You must visit us, yes precious. We will have a guest room in the autumn--hint, hint!
Chris thanks you for the kiss (both of them *gryn*) and whoohoo, all Diana Wynne Jones is good. Go forth and fetch them.
Yes you must! I will send you a huge response in return, I promise. *kisses*
