neverwhere: (I'm so cute)
[personal profile] neverwhere
Have I mentioned yet how much I love Dave Gorman? He is truly the cutest, silliest man in all England. *giggles*

I just watched the new Buffy episode, wooohooooo! All hail Kazaa! :D
I was actually a bit disappointed with most of it, not because it was a bad episode, but because I had seen such glowing reviews my expectations were too high. I really like the sexy new principal, although the new Sunnydale High campus looks more like the outside of the LA zoo than a proper high school. *giggles*
But the ending...oh WOW, that was truly amazing. I was left speechless, I can't believe what happened! Series 7 looks like it's going to be fantastic. :)

And now I'm going to say something I never thought I would...Spike is gorgeous. *grins*
I've always liked Spike, but for his humour ('people are just Happy Meals on legs'), not because he's delicious eyecandy. All that has changed however. I don't know why, but the hotness of James Marsters was unbelievable in this episode. Maybe it's because he was really sweet and pathetic and I just like that sort of thing, maybe it's because his hair looked slightly different...all I know is that my heart was pounding and I started to swoooon. Gahhh, I can't believe I feel this way over Spike! I wonder if it will last. *laughs*
(Don't worry Xander my love, you'll always be my favourite Buffyhoney. Well, apart from Giles of course. *giggles* ;-)

Continuing with the Buffy theme (gosh, I've talked about nothing else all week! I haven't been this involved with Buffyness in years...) I am currently downloading songs from Anthony Stewart Head's album Music for Elevators. So far I've listened to 3 songs, and they are great -- not at all what I was expecting, more techno-jazz-pop than rock and roll, very synthy and evocative. I am liking it very much, and not just because its Giles. *G*

Actually, if someone could recommend so new music to me I'd really appreciate it. I think I've been stuck in a bit of a musical rut lately (I've only listened to Tori Amos, The Divine Comedy, Loreena McKennit and various musicals for months now) and am desperate for something new. Unfortunately the brief snippets of contemporay music I've heard have made me feel absolutely ill, they are so appalling, so I haven't had much hope of finding anything decent. In case you don't know, I like 60's rock, good modern rock like Garbage and U2, rennaisance, classical and celtic music, singer-songwriters, and bands that make me laugh, like Moxy Fruvous and Barenaked Ladies. So, any suggestions? :)

Well, I am buying Gomez tomorrow. Purely cos Alchemilla used it in her Aragorn/Frodo vid and it is totally addictive and lovely! I had sort of heard of them but wouldn't have known what they sounded like. I hope the rest of their music is as good. I do this a lot, buy on impulse!

Nice icon, btw.

What's Gomez? I've never heard of them, or Alchemilla.

Thanks! You know it's me, right? *grins*

AAHHAHA. The Blue!! The BLUE! (But we've already discussed this)

But yes. Season 7 is looking to be very very cool. One of the things I'm really leery about when it comes to my impending move to England is the fact that I won't be up to date on Buffy. Such horror...but there's always downloads. Thank goodness for technology.

I dunno, Xander is, in season 2, very annoying, making jokes at the absolutely wrong time. I hope he grows up. Though the swooning I can definitely relate to, albeit to Willow. Never really had it for any other Buffy character (or any other character in any movie, period, as far as I can remember). I just find girls like her - sweet, shy, a bit unsure of themselves, highly intelligent - to be absolutely wonderful. Not enough of them.

It rules that you like the "sweet and pathetic" type of guy. It's a shame you don't live near me. You'd have a field day. ;)

As for music... hrms. You *might* like Steeleye Span or Fairport Convention. Rock n' roll versions (albeit often with traditional instruments) of old folk songs, with wonderful female vocals. Not enough people know who Sandy Denny was, and that's a shame.

Oh, I wanted to ask you - ever read Bored of the Rings?

Date: 2002-10-06 04:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] angelislington.livejournal.com

I hated Bored of the Rings. :) Did you see that I recommended a book for you in my last entry?

'sweet, shy, a bit unsure of themselves, highly intelligent'.... Yep, that's me allright! :D

I've heard of Fairport and have been wanting to find some good songs, can you recommend your favourites please? :)

You hated Bored of the Rings? Blasphemy. ;) I get a kick out of Goodgulf Greyteeth... heh heh heh. Yes, I did! Sorry I haven't replied. What is it about, exactly? I don't think I've heard of Charles De Lint.

Yep, that's me allright! :D Ooh, be still my beating heart. And you're cute, too! *grins*

Lesse... Fairport tunes... I only have one of their albums, Leige and Lief (their most highly regarded) and some of the songs that come to mind are:

Come All Ye
Matty Groves
Tam Lin
Farewell Farewell

Farewell Farewell isn't likely to make any new fans of their music, it's just one of my personal favourites. Their most famous songs are probably Matty Groves and Tam Lin.

I'm sure you have (cos you're cool ;) ) but if you've not heard of Tam Lin before, check out this page. It's an old Scottish ballad about a man who has been captured by the fairies, and a woman who rescues him.

Date: 2002-10-06 05:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] angelislington.livejournal.com

Hehehe COURSE I know about Tam Lin! Silly boy. :-P

I can't believe you've never read any Charles De Lint! And you think *I'm* the blasphemer. *chuckles*
He is the best writer of urban fantasy/modern myth there is, and I absolutely adore his work. He writes short story collections mostly, set in the fictional town of Newford, but he also does some amazing novels as well. You should read his first collection, Dreams Underfoot, I know you'll fall in love with Jilly and Sophie and all his other wonderful creations.

I'll try and find some of those Fairport songs on Kazaa tomorrow (it's time for bed now), thanks! *squishes*

And yes, I *am* cute. Thank you for noticing. ;-)

Hey, most people don't know about Tam Lin, dear. ;)

I have a hard time with reading, so I try not to get started on big books. I read VERY SLOWLY, etc. But I will look for him in my library.

If you can't find any Fairport tunes on Kazaa, just ask me for 'em, I've ripped Fairport and Steeye both to my hard drive (along with lots more) so I can set you up.

And of course. ;)

Dave is ad-freaking-dorable. I went to see him in one of his shows 'better world' in the little theatre down the road. Cring with laughter. crying.
The guy started a chain letter, where instead of sending 5 people 5 dollars, you send them those little things on elastic you put round your shoes to make them sound like tap shoes. and two people actually sent him some :)

Dead Can Dance, anything with Lisa Gerrard ... always recommended.

Therion and Nightwish are two bands that meld the classical with modern rock, sometimes to beautiful result.

Music recomendations! Ooo

Where to start!! Ohkay how about some for each genre.

Rennaisance/classical/gothy: The Changelings. I cannot sing the praises enough of this band. Very ethereal sounding. Website is changelings.com Also try anything by Paul Schwartz (Especially Miserere) and Emilie Autumn.

Celtic/medevial: Blackmore's Night! Their version of Greensleeves utterly rocks my socks. Also Lisa Lynne, Einalem and Enaid and Iona.

Modern Rock: Have to plug my favourite band the Smashing Pumpkins. Love love love them. Also uhm Splashdown, Starsailor and Ivy who are just BRILLIANT.

I'm also fond of Hungry Lucy, Delierium, Balligomingo, J. Ralph, Jamiroquai and loads of Japanese music. You can check my music site (yay for shamelessly plugging!) http://black-dove.net/music for more recommendations. Hope this helps^^

and i hope i didn't get too carried away

Thanks for all the recommendations! *hugs*

I've never heard of The Changelings, but I love their name, so I'm definately going to look them up.

Actually, I like ALL of your suggestions, they all sound really interesting. I do have the Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits album, and the Delirium album Karma (bought for the brilliant duet with Sarah McLaughlin), but apart from them I don't have anything else you recommended. Looks like I'm off to HMV tomorrow! :D

Hi! You don't know me, but... I've never heard anything from Blackmore's Night. I'm encouraged to hear that they're good. I was a teenage metalhead (good title for a movie, eh? ;P) and so I know Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple / Rainbow fame.

Rainbow did a song called "16th Century Greensleeves" which has nothing whatsoever to do with the original ballad (it's about murdering a tyrant king, of all things). This sounds like something I'm gonna look into on Kazaa tonight.

THe Changelings! They are another great band, yes ... excellent list, I've added some to my search.

I would like to add you to my list here, if you don't mind, you have rare taste in music, and if you like Nightwish, hell if you've even heard of them ... :-)

I'd suggest Dar William's The Green World CD, and Indigo Girl's Retrospective (greatest hits). Those are two of my favorites, anyway, and I'm a Loreena and Tori fan as well : ) Both are kind of folky/rock-ish.

I know of Dar Williams (she played at my uni a few times), so I suppose I should check out some of her songs. I have the Indigo Girls album Swamp Ophelia, but only because we sang alot of their songs in a capella choir. I haven't listened to it in a long time, perhaps I shall again and see if I appreciate them more in my old age. *grins*

Indigo Girls are wonderful. I find that the more I listen to them, the more depth I find in thier songs. I love Shaming of the Sun and Swamp Ophelia, and Come On Now Social - Retrospective is a great collection of thier best - and that sums up all of thier CDs that I've got ;). But they're so, so good. I highly recommend them.

Aside from that, I've just started to enjoy Boiled in Lead, Cletic rock type. Very good stuff there.

Sounds like you had a very Buffy day! ^_^

Oh, and, just to mention...I love Bach.

Anyway. ^^ If I could recommend some music for you...hm... Do you have the Shrek soundtrack? Or the Moulin Rouge soundtrack? There's a singer who's been featured in many a movie, and he's really rather good. His name's Rufus Wainwright. Heard of him? Anyway, that's something to look into if you'd like.

Also, I have a friend who just "discovered" both Tori Amos, and The Devine Comedy, and she's now head-over-heels for them. ^__^ I should check into *that* myself, ne? ^~

Date: 2002-10-07 12:15 am (UTC)

YES, you should. Tori and DivCom are the BEST! *bouncebounce* :D

I've heard of Rufus Wainwright but I have no idea what his music sounds like. Will find out. *grins*

music advice

From: [identity profile] silverwraith.livejournal.com
ok, some older bands I'd recommend (though maybe you already know them!) are:

-anything by Procol Harum (they're just...what they are! which is kick ass. hehehe.)
-Jethro Tull (their earlier stuff, like 1975 and older...it's more easily appreciable)
-Paul Kantner's albums "Blows Against the Empire" and "Sunfighter" (don't know if you're into Jefferson Airplane, but these are Pauls semi-solo projects and they're overall much more mellow...both are beautiful, I think, but I'm a huge Paul K. fan.)

and now for some newer stuff:

-Rusted Root (a group that writes modern rock-hippie-jamming music with heavy influences of African drumming and beats...I can't really describe them well. they have multiple singers--including one or two women, depending on the album--but they write really good songs lyrically and musically.)
-Lisa Gerrard (a sort of celtic singer, but not quite--she's Austrailian. she sings in different languages and has a lot of outside influences including celtic and arabian undertones. her voice is really distinctive, with a really wide range. if you want a sample of her stuff you can listen to the Gladiator soundtrack, she sings a little on that.)
-soundtrack to The Insider movie. (this is also Lisa Gerrard, but she co-wrote stuff so it sounds a little different. a really relaxing album, I think.)
-soundtrack to the Score movie. (ditto--uber-relaxing, sorta jazz influenced movie classical stuff. nice. it's by Howard Shore, if that influences you. *grin*)

if you want any specific album suggestions for the ones I didn't give, just tell me. :)

I think I like Jethro Tull (he's the mad flute player, yes?), I should get one of his albums. Does he have a Greatest Hits?
And I do like Jefferson Airplane (NOT Jefferson Starship however -- Corporate Rock just isn't my thing ;-), will have to search him out.

Lisa Gerrard sounds fabulous, even if she did sing on the Gladiator soundtrack. *grins*
Ah well, any exposure is good exposure, neh? :)

hehehe...Lisa was the highlight of the Gladiator music! you remember that really sad scene where he finds his wife and kid all charred and hanging? (lovely image, heh, sorry!) well the chick wailing in the background is Ms Gerrard. I wake up to one of her songs every day on my alarm clock, hehehe. (I have one of those CD player alarm things.)

early Jefferson Starship (like, 1974-76) is still pretty good--but when Paul leaves (eergh...methinks that was around 1978) they turn really corporate and start to suck because he wasn't around to influence them anymore. exhibit A: "we built this city." that song is DREADFUL. :P but the two albums I recommended are anything but corporate, heh...I don't think they sold all that well because they're so...well, I want to say weird, but that's not true--I'll just say "different."

and yes, Ian Anderson is Jethro Tull's mad flute player. *grin* I just love his voice. I don't know of any greatest hits albums off-hand...*thinks* but you could just get Stand Up or Benefit, cause those two are good enough to be greatest hits collections. I also heartily recommend Aqualung, Thick As A Brick and Minstrel in the Gallery, but those probably aren't the best introduction to Tull because they're more thematic and take some prior Tull exposure to really get into. :)

*re-reads post* gah, I sound preachy! *hangs head* sorry!
